I was curious to find out more.

I took 5 popular jigheads weighing 1/8th of an ounce and put them on a scale.
The reason I did this is to get an accurate reading on the weight of these jigheads so I can make adjustments where it’s needed.
The results were astonishing!
After doing some math, the difference between the highest weight and the lowest weight was 60%.
That is a HUGE difference!
This impacts where your lure swims in the water column and how fast it sinks.
The heavier a jighead is, the faster it will fall to the bottom.
But, if you are switching from 1/8 oz. to another jighead style of the same weight, your lures will all fall at the same rate.
Another discovery was the rigging of the lure can be just as important as the selected weight.

One thing you didn’t mention is a weighted hook with a paddle tail could be used around docks since it also fail vertically. That way you are now weedless.
Awesome testing really enjoyed! I test my plastics and lures in my pool regularly learning little details, really enjoy. Would love to hear your opinion of differences if any between a straight jighead ring or cross set ring. Thank you in advance.

Pat, I enjoyed following your experiments and the conclusion reached. The difference in the weights should not affect the time to fall. However, the cross-section area of the jig and the lure will affect the fall time. The amount of water to be dispersed, moved out of the way, by the falling object is going to influence the fall time. Like the aerodynamics involved in vehicle design. The shape and cross section area of the external portions of the vehicle is going to determine the wind resistance.
Having the capability of moving the lead weight on the Hoss Helix Hooks forward to backward should allow cross section area to be decreased or increased. The cross-section area is less when the lure is heading down at a sharp angle, as when using a Hoss Weedless Football Jighead or a Hoss Football Jighead. There by the fall time and glide time can be slightly increased by sliding the weight back. The longer number 4 hook could allow a little more influence. Maybe a new hook design with a moveable weight could be envisioned.
I would like to know the time in seconds for a couple of the more popular jigheads and lures to fall 20 feet to give the fisherman an idea when the rig is going to reach the bottom. The water depth further up north in the Chesapeake Bay is frequently 10 to 30 feet deep. Having an idea for the fall time for 20 feet could be used to estimate the time for other depths.
Did this experiment 10 years ago, love the belly weight just because you can move the weight forward, I felt the versatility was on point

Pat, By chance did you test the Power Prawn football jig vs. the standard jig?
Well to me that’s not surprising think about it you buy a set of cloths let’s day pants from a store and they are levis and they fit your size perfectly so after a while you go back to buy more but let’s say they are out of that brand and only have wranglers but that same size fits differently even though it’s labeled the same size to that manufacturer its different same for jigheads if all manufacturers made there products the same way as everyone this would not occur but just because it says it’s the same in weight doesn’t mean it’s going to sink or act like another of the same weight but from a different company because they are all man made and never exactly the same as everyone else thanks for the info and all you do😉👍
