JJ and I set out to target inshore redfish.

He wanted to dial into the redfish bite during these early days of spring.

He hasn’t had any issues finding trout – so he wanted to learn more to specifically target redfish in spring.

On days like this, redfish are typically going to sit closer to the grassline.

No matter what structure you’re fishing (oyster beds, grasslines, rocks, etc.), you want to fish as tight to it as possible.

You should try and move closer to effectively position yourself for an accurate cast.

You want your baits as close to shore or as tight to structure as possible.

That is where the predatory fish are hanging out.

Chances are most of the strikes will happen within a few cranks of the reel.

If you’re working a shoreline, take notice of slight changes or things that stand out.

Cast there!!!

I’m talking about the WIND and the SUN.

Not only will air temperatures go up and down in the winter, but so will the water temperatures.

These fish are going to move around accordingly.

If you don’t move around with them, you’ll have tough days out on the water.

Sun

The sun plays an overlooked role in wintertime planning.

It determines if the water temperature will slightly rise in areas depending on how exposed the sun is.

On a sunny day, the water temperatures will increase and the fish will tend to move up shallow to feed.

If the sun is blocked on a cloudy day, lots of times those fish will stay deep.

Wind

The bottom line with the wind is looking for wind-protected areas – always!

Wind causes water temperatures to drop in affected areas.

Fish are looking for the warmest possible water in the winter.

The ultimate recipe here is to combine the wind and sun to have them both in your favor in a given spot.

Lure Selection

Everyone has their favorite redfish lures.

But for me, I’m always going to grab a small shrimp imitation.

Pretty much everything eats a shrimp and that is what’s most abundant during winter.

Our Prawn USA Junior is my go-to lure.

If I’m fishing in less than 3 feet of water, I’ll use a super light jighead.

A 1/10 oz. Z-Man Pro ShroomZ jighead or a 1/8-1/16 oz. Hoss Helix Hook is best for the shallows.

Any deeper than 3 feet, and I’ll go with a Hoss Weedless Football Jigheads.

The weight there will determine on current speed and depth.

The #1 flats fishing mistake is making too much noise.

You need to cautiously approach the fish so as not to spook them off.

Second, don’t make bad casts that will only hurt your chances of hooking into fish.

On a recent trip, I found a school of solid fish but they were quickly bouncing around the flat.

I’d have to chase them down, make a few casts, and then regroup to follow them as they swam off.

It took about 10 casts until I finally hooked into a fish.

It felt like I was never going to get a good shot at these fish.

Every time I stopped to make a cast, the wind pushed me out of range.

Turns out this was a bigger fish than I thought.

The third big mistake I see when anglers fight big fish is not lifting their rod up when fish dive beneath their vessel.

Don’t raise the rod tip up.

Instead, lift the back of the rod and dip the rod tip into the water.

Big fish get big for a reason.

When you alert them to your presence they will enter protection mode and stop feeding.

Stay as quiet as possible and be as accurate as you can with your casts.

Finger mullet are typically wherever redfish are and redfish have been feeding on them their entire lives.

This is why it can be such a reliable bait when targeting redfish!

Redfishing With Live Mullet [VIDEO]

There are THREE main ways to fish with finger mullet:

1. Live and tail-hooked
2. Live and nose-hooked
3. Cut-bait

These techniques also apply to fishing with pogeys, menhaden, etc.

1. Live & Tail-Hooked

A 30lb fluorocarbon leader attached to a 4/0 circle hook is all you need to start this rig.

Slide the hook right through the top of the body about an inch from the tail.

This technique is excellent for freelining bait over a large flat.

It can also be effective when dock fishing, sight fishing, or anywhere the water is shallower than 3 feet.

A redfish’s mouth is hinged downward so they don’t prefer to swim up to eat live bait.

You can put slight pressure on the mullet with this rig to keep them slow and on the bottom.

2. Live & Nose-Hooked

If you’re sight fishing for redfish, nose-hooking them is a great approach.

You can drag it alongside your boat or in the water next to you if you’re wading and pitch it out where you see fish.

Another thing to take note of is your hook choice.

If you’re sight fishing in heavier current, a 1/8 oz. jighead will work best.

If you’re fishing over a flat without much structure, then a knocker rig will do the trick.

Heavy current situations where you need the bait down on the bottom.

If you’re fishing in shallow water and need the bait to remain stationary in one place, this is my go-to rig.

A few feet of fluorocarbon leader with an egg sinker attached to a swivel connected to 12 inches of leader ending in a 4/0 circle hook.

Hook the bait below the tail on the underside of the body.

Cast it out and that bait will stay in one spot fighting against the weight.

Eventually, a redfish will come along and eat it.

You must fish where the redfish are!!!

Redfish are structure fish and shorelines are a form of structure.

You will find redfish along the shoreline as well as below the dock tight to structure.

The best area to find redfish when dock fishing is on the “Redfish Highway” which stretches across the shoreline around the dock and continues along the bank.

These fish want to be in 18-24 inches of water as close to the shore as possible.

This is also where baitfish gathers and you’ll be able to see pretty quickly whether or not bait is present just by looking down into the water.

Another thing to keep in mind while docking fishing is that you’re fishing from a fixed position.

The fish have to swim toward you – you don’t go out after the fish.

The goal is to intercept redfish that are cruising up and down the Redfish Highway.

Moreover, an often overlooked spot to look for redfish is right beneath your feet below the dock.

Now this might not be the case if the dock is busy and there is lots of foot traffic.

But if you’re fishing in deeper water in the 5-7 foot range and the current brings murky water through, redfish might be below the dock.

The concentrations of redfish will be in the Redfish Highway while also making their way right below the dock itself.

Before walking out onto the dock, remain quiet and drop your bait or lure right beside the dock.

Let the bait sink all the way to the bottom and fish it slowly as close to the dock as you can.
