On-The-Water Analysis
I had little knowledge of the area I launched from, however, it looked very fishy.
Not knowing where to start, I hit some docks on my way out.
If you don’t know where to start, start with docks.
Later on, I came across some tall grass on a flooded shoreline with some smaller creeks branching out.
After lots of work throughout the whole day, I hooked into a SOLID trout.
The next cast I reeled in a nice redfish.
I made sure to keep my distance and backpedal on the kayak to avoid blowing up the spot in front of me.
Then I thought I caught a big clump of grass until my drag started screaming!
From the size of the fish in the water and the strength of the fight, my initial thought was I had a redfish on.
But nope – it was a GIANT trout.
By far this is the biggest speckled trout to date that I’ve caught in North Carolina.
A few casts later, I pulled out a flounder to round out the inshore slam.
The type of spot I was fishing in would normally be bone dry on a low tide without any water.
The redfish and trout were using the other side of this flooded area to sneak through the grass and stack up to chomp down on bait.
They knew the bait had to flush out of this area so they sat and waited for easy meals to come to them.

Near the end of the trip, it became an absolute frenzy with fish after fish getting caught cast after cast.
Slot redfish and huge gator trout were all stacked up in this one type of area.
This is another prime example of how the 90/10 fishing zone can help you locate and catch more fish.

Thanks a ton Thaddeus!
I have caught a lot of big trout in my 20 years of fishing the northeast fl inshore saltwater but never any really big ones in the winter mostly spring and summer so great job on the gator as us floridians would say and yes I do agree if one does not know where to begin to fish and if there are docks present start with them especially ones with deep water near by winter can be tough fishing and more patience and perseverance is sometimes needed more then the warmer months but if applied properly results like yours can be achieved thanks for the great info and all you do for saltstrong😉👍
thanks for the feedback Steven!
