Gear Used On This Trip:

In a recent trip I had fishing with an Insider Member, we came across a GIANT school of trout and were able to consistently pluck fish off without disturbing the entire school.

Extending The Bite

The first thing you need to do when you spark a bite and the fish become active is to get your lure back out in front of those fish as soon as possible.

If you’re keeping fish, get it in the cooler quickly and get your line back out in the water.

The same goes for catch and release – try to do it quickly and get your line in the water.

Unless it is a really nice fish worthy of stopping for a picture, you should try to be fast and get back in the water.

The more time your lure spends out of the water, the more likely it is for that bite to shut off.

This approach is absolutely perfect for fishing with multiple people as well.

You can trade off catching and releasing fish to make sure a lure is always in the water.

Don’t Make Any Drastic Changes

If that bite does happen to slow down a bit, don’t change anything too drastic.

Instead, leave your set up as is and fan cast the entire area.

The trout schools will often move around a bit, especially after you’ve reeled in a few fish.

Sometimes they can move deeper, shallower, or further away from you.

And if you’re fishing with multiple people, you can find that school a lot quicker.

If that bite slows down, try casting around the area until you find the school again.

When The Bite Slows Down

Now when the bite begins to slow down and you’re catching fish on every 4th or 5th cast, that’s when you should change your lure presentation.

Try a different lure color, profile, or size to get something different in front of those fish.

Odds are they just got familiar with what you kept throwing their way.

So something new will grab their attention and spark an additional bite.

Or you can totally change out the style of your lure entirely to a hard-body lure or something different.

Changing Weights

This is the last and most drastic change I would recommend after the adjustments mentioned above.

With a heavier weight, you can fish deeper and reel a little faster which is sometimes what’s needed to kick on a bite.

This is a last resort effort as you really don’t want to have to retie knots if you don’t have to.

Conclusion

Once you’re on that speckled trout school, keep your lure in the water!!!

Get the fish off your hook and get back in the water.

Try to do the little things to extend the time you have in front of that school so you can reel in more fish.

Great advice pat and I would say that this technique not only works for trout but reds as well about 2 weeks ago when northeast fl got a big cold snap and the water temp dropped about 10 degrees from the low 60s to the low 50s I found a hole next to an oyster mound that was located in front of a beacon marker a very large tower in a creek that had large pilings between the tower and the mound there is a deep hole that drops off from about 4 ft to about 10ft the reds were in that hole I caught 10 of them most were not legal but the one I caught on my last cast was a solid 26 incher I also noticed here in your report that you used the mulligan well I did to in fact that last red that day was caught on one a Fred mulligan but I cut it down to match the size of the 2.0 because the 4 inch standard size mulligan I would think would be to big but when I cut it down it worked great I ordered 2 bundles of all 4 mulligan colors and I cut down 4 baits each of each color so I have both the 4 inch for warmer months and the smaller 2.0 size for colder month fishing thanks pat again for the info and all you do😉👍
