So here are the great things about this lure and some of its downfalls.
Pros:
- Made out of tough duratech material that’s very durable and stretchy
- Segmented tail will help with underwater action
- Both lures come built with a rattle in the chamber, which is a great attractant, especially in calmer water
Cons:
- Segmented tail does not have a mesh reinforcement so over time, or with an angry pinfish, the tail could more easily be torn off
- Hooks are pre-rigged on both lures (if something happens to the hook or lure, you can’t get a replacement, you’ll have to get a whole new lure)
- The weedless lure is more weed resistant than totally weedless and may snag on grass because of the fluorocarbon weed guard
Savage Gear 3D Application
The performance of each lure (standard vs. weedless) is going to be very different because of the weight design.
When compared to the weedless version, the standard Savage Gear Shrimp lure is more in line with how a shrimp would perform when it’s rigged on a jighead.
Because of the buoyant material it’s made out of and the design of the standard weight, it’s going to bounce up and down on the bottom and at rest, the head will point downward as the tail flutters up.
The weedless lure has more of a keel-weighted hook (similar to an Owner TwistLock) so this version is going to land more level, swim straighter through the water, and give you a more finesse approach.

Justin, I was wondering if the hook on the std model slides through the body enabling you to tip the hook into the body to make it truly weedless.
Hey Jamie! The plastic of the lure is molded over the hook on the standard model, so there is no way to move the hook around without separating it from the body. The same applies with the Weedless model, although the weed guard will help reduce snagging on some floating debris and help prevent snagging on docks/oysters.
Double Fluoro weed guards work great fly fishing on grass flats. It looks like the belly weighted version would be ideal for a grass flat because that weight position will make it sink slower.
I just picked some up, they look amazing in person and it seems like Savage has been on a run the last two or three years by stepping up their products big time.
Agreed, Steven. Savage Gear has stepped up their game in the past few years, with 2020 and 2021 being a great streak for them. Let us know your honest opinions on these lures after you’ve tested them out!
would love to see a comparison between the prawn and this bait. Is that coming up?
I’m sure that’s in the pipeline, Pablo 🙂 I’ll chat with Tony & Luke to see if we can compare all the popular Shrimp Lures in a future video
The savage gear shrimp is ok and so is the visit shrimp but both can’t even compare to my favorite the chasebaits flick prawn is totally weedless as well but unlike lures with weedgard the chasebaits has a slot in front of its single hook that when the hook is pulled down that makes it totally weedless and can be thrown in the nastiest of snags without worry and unlike the savage gear or vudu it has a rattle and to me is the most lifelike shrimp out there with the exception of the live target shrimp but the live target has no action is not weedless either I like to add a small amount of shrimp scented procure fosh scent to mine underneath the tail but only a little because this bait is also made out of the tough new plastics as well to me the competition has no chance also the chasebaits just came out with this year with a new smaller 2.75 inch size perfect for when the shrimp that fish are feeding on are small still like now and when fish are scattering small shrimp under docks at night works for me😁
Good points, Steven! These Savage Gear RTF Shrimp are pretty new to the market (only been out for a few weeks), so there’s a lot of testing/comparing that will need to be done! I would say these are very similar to a Vudu Shrimp, but probably move a little bit slower through the water because of the thicker tail. Looking forward to testing them out around some docks & creeks soon!
My apology, I commented as a guest and immediately got my comment dropped. I do support Salt Strong, but on this particular product, I’m still with the understanding that shrimp are tail swimmers. Much like crayfish, propelling from tail to head to swim. Please, if I’m incorrect, I apologize 😔
Hey Everett! I hear that question come up quite a bit! Shrimp actually swim forwards naturally when they are navigating through the water. It’s only when they are threatened or trying to retreat that they “flick” backwards. If you’ve ever had the chance to watch Shrimp at night (check out any dock lights or underwater lights near an inlet or pass), you’ll notice that Shrimp swim forwards. I will say this. I have used the Savage Gear 3D Shrimp over the years and have done very well with them on grass flats. If these perform anything like the original 3D Shrimp (which I believe they will), then I say we have a winner.
Yeah, Crawfish swim “Backwards” I know which is why we rig them claws out. But no clue about shrimp to be honest. I can see them being similar.
Hmmmn,🤔 I have been confused for along time. I thought shrimp were tail swimmers, as in kicked from tail to head !!!

I have usually heard that lures that look exactly like the prey they are designed to imitate, when out of the water, catch fisherman more than fish. As an avid fly fisherman, I know that most of the things on the end of my line, when held up out of the water, would not fool anyone into thinking they were any real living thing. Yet, when worked through the water properly, whether a small beaded nymph bouncing along the bottom of a trout stream unassisted with the current, or a saltwater bait imitation with animal hair stripped through the water and presenting the right kind of silhouette and flash, to the underwater prey, they look right. The Savage Gear products reject that idea. I bought one of their crab once. It broke off fairly quickly so I can’t really evaluate it. But I’m wondering what other SaltStrong people say about these real-looking lures. Do they work?
Very reasonable question, Stephen. I think you’ll find unanimous agreement amongst the Salt Strong guys that it’s not so much the lure being “realistic” that gets the strikes, it’s the action of the lure, and the application of where you use it. I feel the actions of both the Vudu Shrimp and the Savage Gear shrimp are similar. They both are made out of a similar plastic, both have a similar pre-mounted weighted hook, and both have segmented tails & rattles. Vudu Shrimp have caught a ton of fish over the years, and 5-6 years ago, anglers would say those look pretty realistic. To answer your question, the “realistic” look of a lure catches more fisherman than fish. But, if the action is right, then it doesn’t hurt to have both on your side!
thanks
The action looks good on these, especially the legs and the “weedless” one sitting flat on the bottom. To honest though, I have too many shrimp lures already (Power Prawn, Vudu, Z-man EZ, DOA, and Gulp).
They look exactly like “Vudu shrimp” down to the shape of the weight.
Agreed. The standard one looks like exactly like the Vudu one.
Yes! Very similar. I think they’ve made some nuanced changes, like the thicker “boot” on the tail, which causes the lure to slow on the decent and track a little straighter on the retrieve. I can’t wait to get on the water this weekend with these Savage Shrimp and put them through the ringer…
I am holding one in my hand side by side, the Savage one looks much more realistic and has a little more mass to it.
Cant wait to try it out this weekend
