Trip Report

Insider Member Jason Blanton was struggling to get results with lures in his home waters, so I had him join me on a quick morning session to see what was causing the lack of results.

He’s done a lot of live bait fishing but found inconsistent results with lures.

Within a few casts, he was shockingly quick at getting strikes with an assortment of lures.

I started things off by throwing the Moonwalker Topwater lure and set Jason up with a subsurface Mulligan paddletail.

This is a super effective strategy to dial into a bite.

Jason started off the trip reeling in a trout on his first cast.

The bite wasn’t steady due to the irregular tides but Jason was getting much more action on subsurface lures than I was on hard-body topwater baits.

So, I decided to take him to a local bridge to work some Prawn USA lures on bottom.

That’s when we got into a steady grouper bite of all sizes.

Later on, we moved to deeper zones of grass flats just next to nearby channels.

This is an excellent way to uncover a bite.

More often than not, fish are there and willing to eat.

The main takeaways from this trip are keep moving to find the bite.

If you’re struggling, check to make sure your rigs and line and everything is set.

Then, locate the 90/10 Zone to find those fish!!

Are you a beginner to saltwater fishing?

➡ How To Tie The Palomar Knot

Gear Needed:

This is a universal rig that is as close as you can get to a guarantee no matter where you’re fishing.

We’re not going to talk specific species.

It’s all about hitting the water to catch something to get tight lines.

If you’re just getting into saltwater fishing, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment.

As a matter of fact, simple is better.

Recommended Gear Outfit

Combos are a great choice for beginners.

We have an excellent combo available in our tackle shop – the Daiwa D Shock Spinning Combo.

The rod is a 7-foot Medium Power Spinning Rod combined with a spinning reel spooled with 12-lb monofilament.

They are very inexpensive and will get the job done.

Universal Saltwater Rig

Because the reel is spooled with monofilament, there is no need for leaders or pre-tied rigs.

On the end of the line, tie a size #1 hook using a Palomar Knot.

Then about six inches up from that, we’re going to put a small split-shot weight.

The weight of the split-shot will depend on the depth you’re fishing as well as the speed of the current.

That’s all there is to it.

Bait Choices

As far as the bait to use, frozen shrimp is always a great choice.

Yes you can use live shrimp but frozen will get the job done.

Break the shrimp up into little pieces and slide them onto the hook.

Drop the bait down near hard structure like docks, bridges, oysters, etc. – spots where there are all sorts of fish swimming below.

Spot Selection

The best places to start with this rig are near bridges or piers.

These are big structures that hold lots of fish.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when fishing off of piers is casting way out in front of them.

The fish are right beneath your feet close to the structure.

A common error here is staying in one spot for too long.

If you’re fishing one bridge piling without any luck, pick up and try a different spot.

Keep moving until you find the bite.

Once you find one fish, more often than not you’ll find more.

Popping Corks VS. Weighted Hooks – what’s going to catch more fish?

We designed our very own Popping Cork, Dr. Popper, so we had to hit the water to test it out!

Check out the results and final tally below!!

➡ Get Dr. Popper Popping Corks

Joe and I started off fishing the same exact lure – but I had a popping cork tied on my rig.

We both were using a Slam Shady 2.0 paddletail.

I rigged that on a jighead below the popping cork while Joe had his rigged on a Hoss Helix Hook.

Joe had it rigged on a Hoss Helix Hook and I had it beneath a Dr. Popper popping cork roughly 18 inches from the hook.

To keep things fair, we fished the same areas and swapped setups halfway through.

I kicked things off with the first fish but Joe followed it up quickly to even things out.

When the score hit 5-3 (in favor of the popping cork) it was time to switch setups.

After everything was over, the Popping Cork setup won the day catching the most fish.

The popping cork we used is Dr. Popper.

They are unique in the fact that they used monofilament line instead of wire.

That typically prevents you from fitting popping corks into most tackle boxes.

This is not the case with Dr. Popper.

Don’t make this common mistake that loses fish!

I unfortunately lost a possible trophy fish because of it.

Worst of all – it is 100% avoidable.

Here’s how to prevent this fishing line leader fail!!

Common Mistake That Loses Fish [VIDEO]

➡Advanced Knots Module [Fishing School]

Equipment:

While I was out fishing a nearshore reef, I hooked into a GIANT keeper cobia.

After I took the hook out, I went and checked my leader line.

This is something you should be in the habit of doing.

I thought everything was fine with my leader so I kept on fishing.

Not long after that, I got what could’ve been the BIGGEST fish I’ve ever hooked into with artificial lures.

This fish ripped off drag and felt like a monster cobia.

It could’ve been my biggest cobia ever…

But I will never know.

Because I did not retie my leader assembly.

Although the line felt fine in my hands, the loop that wraps through the eye of the jighead was compromised.

That was the part that gave way when the fish was peeling off drag.

WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE:

  • Retie the loop knot

I did not check the loop knot that was attached to the jighead.

I should have looked at that knot and retied it since it was compromised.

Even if it does not appear broken, it is worth retying.

  • Used a bite tippet

This was one of the few times I did NOT use a bite tippet.

The bite tippet is a small 6-8 inch section of leader at the end of your normal leader to strengthen the entire system.

Always check the loop of your loop knots after reeling in big fish.

And using a bite tippet is recommended when fishing around hard structure for bigger fish.

This will ensure there is no failure up close to the lure.

Want to effortlessly add rattles to your lures?

➡ Get the Z-Man Rattle-Snaker Tool

Featured Lures:

I was recently fishing a tournament in Jacksonville, Florida in super muddy water.

I needed to make something happen if I wanted to place near the top.

The Z-Man Rattle-Snaker tool allowed me to effortlessly add rattles to lures so I could get the strikes I needed.

It is a simple tool used to insert rattles in soft plastic lures.

Before putting the needlepoint of the tool in the lure, establish where the hook will be in the lure.

Steer clear of that area.

Insert the Rattle-Snaker tool into the lure and twist off the back end of the tool.

Take a Battle Rattle and place that inside the chute on the front-end piece of the tool that is still inside the lure.

Then, slide the end of the Rattle-Snaker back into place pushing the rattle into the lure.

Use your thumb to carefully slide the tool out of the lure leaving the rattle in place.

Stretch the lure out a bit and you’ll lock the rattle into place.

The same concept will apply no matter the soft plastic lure you are using.

Find areas of the lure that won’t interfere with the hook but also have enough plastic to secure the rattle.

Here’s 5 of the most common inshore fishing myths DEBUNKED!

Are you just starting your inshore saltwater fishing journey?

Myth #1: You Need Live Bait To Catch Fish

This is absolutely not true.

Every day, dozens on dozens of our Insider Members are sharing reports of BIG fish they caught on artificial lures.

We are not saying live bait does not catch fish.

In fact, if you are a beginner, you should try out live shrimp while fishing inshore.

You’ll wind up catching something.

But, you don’t need to always rely on live bait.

If you take the time to master artificial lures, it can save you TIME and MONEY!

Myth #2: You Need A TON Of Different Lures

We’re all susceptible to clever marketing telling us we need the latest and greatest lure out there.

But, what we teach at Salt Strong is simplicity.

Mastering a few different lure profiles is going to go much further in your fishing success than having every lure known to man.

Find your confidence bait that no matter where or when you can work well to entice a bite.

Myth #3: Color Is MORE Important Than You Think

Color doesn’t really matter all that much.

You’ll hear all sorts of different opinions on lure colors from anyone you know.

The reality is – they ALL work!

The most important thing is finding the feeding fish.

If you’re out there fishing, it is very rare that a slight color change will make the difference.

We need to focus on finding the feeding fish.

Once that is accomplished, we can talk about lure profiles as well as depth coverage.

Myth #4: Fish Don’t Bite During Certain Seasons

In reality, fish are going to eat all year round.

You just need to be where they’re going to be feeding.

Fish follow trends.

During certain times of the year depending on seasonal changes, fish are going to move.

They likely won’t be in the same places.

Myth #5: You NEED A Boat To Catch Big Fish

This is one of the biggest fallacies out there.

It is absolutely not true that you NEED a vessel.

You can still catch a ton of quality fish from shore, you just need to take capitalize on the advantages.

Land-based anglers have the advantage of stealth.

You can get closer to fish and scare less fish away.

Use what you have to your advantage before thinking about leveling up.
