➡ How To Tie The Palomar Knot

Gear Needed:

This is a universal rig that is as close as you can get to a guarantee no matter where you’re fishing.

We’re not going to talk specific species.

It’s all about hitting the water to catch something to get tight lines.

If you’re just getting into saltwater fishing, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment.

As a matter of fact, simple is better.

Recommended Gear Outfit

Combos are a great choice for beginners.

We have an excellent combo available in our tackle shop – the Daiwa D Shock Spinning Combo.

The rod is a 7-foot Medium Power Spinning Rod combined with a spinning reel spooled with 12-lb monofilament.

They are very inexpensive and will get the job done.

Universal Saltwater Rig

Because the reel is spooled with monofilament, there is no need for leaders or pre-tied rigs.

On the end of the line, tie a size #1 hook using a Palomar Knot.

Then about six inches up from that, we’re going to put a small split-shot weight.

The weight of the split-shot will depend on the depth you’re fishing as well as the speed of the current.

That’s all there is to it.

Bait Choices

As far as the bait to use, frozen shrimp is always a great choice.

Yes you can use live shrimp but frozen will get the job done.

Break the shrimp up into little pieces and slide them onto the hook.

Drop the bait down near hard structure like docks, bridges, oysters, etc. – spots where there are all sorts of fish swimming below.

Spot Selection

The best places to start with this rig are near bridges or piers.

These are big structures that hold lots of fish.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when fishing off of piers is casting way out in front of them.

The fish are right beneath your feet close to the structure.

A common error here is staying in one spot for too long.

If you’re fishing one bridge piling without any luck, pick up and try a different spot.

Keep moving until you find the bite.

Once you find one fish, more often than not you’ll find more.

Live Shrimp Rig:

If fish see too much going on in your rig, they won’t bite the hook.

When you’re fishing tight to docks, bridges, and similar structure, the rig shown above is the way to go.

You’ll want to go with a light line and small hooks.

Hook size depends on the size of the shrimp you’ve got.

First, pinch the tail of the shrimp off – just the fan section.

This helps release scent from the shrimp and keeps it alive.

Slide the hook through one side of the body and out through the other.

Not only does this rig release more scent, but it also is easier to cast the shrimp farther using this method.

No matter your skill level, this is an effective way to get tight lines quickly.

All you need is live or dead shrimp.

If you don’t have shrimp, Gulp! is an excellent alternative for this rig.

The rig is called a “Dropper Rig”.

There are a few advantages to this type of bait rig as opposed to others commonly used.

Because the hook is above the weight, you’ll be able to feel the bites much better.

Also, when the hook is above the weight, the hook is the first thing to be pulled when you go to set the hook.

For the rig I am using, I had a #4 live bait hook but any type of bait hook will work as long as it matches the size of your bait.

Keep the hook size on the smaller side.

As far as weights, I am fishing with a 1 oz. bank sinker.

If you’re having a tough day or you’re fishing with beginners, this is one of the best and easiest ways to get tight lines.

➡ PDF Download – FWC Snell Rig Rules & Regulations

Featured Equipment:

There are a few specifics you must follow in order to tie a legal Double-Snell Rig that adheres to the fishing laws down in Florida.

Be sure to check your local laws on these rigs so you know what you can and cannot use.

In the attached document, Gulf regulations are listed on page 2 under (4) sections (a) and (b).

When it comes to the Atlantic, regulations are listed on page 3 under (5) sections (a) and (b).

Here is an excerpt from the Gulf regulations:

“Required gear in the Gulf reef fish fishery. For a person on board a vessel harvesting or attempting to harvest, including catch and release…Non-stainless steel circle hooks. Non-stainless steel circle hooks are required to be used on hook and line gear when fishing with natural baits…At least one dehooking device is required and must be used to remove hooks embedded in Gulf reef fish with minimum damage…”

If you live outside of Florida, be sure to research the regulations and rules in your area to adhere to local laws.

When it comes to finding nearshore honey holes, the Smart Fishing Spots platform does this for you.

Using the Artificial Reefs layer, all the known reefs in your area instantly appear within seconds.

The gear you use to tie the Double-Snell is incredibly important.

You must use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks.

The Gamakatsu Circle Inline hooks fit the bill.

How To Assemble The Double-Snell

I prefer to use 60lb leader with 6/0 hooks.

I recommend using 4/0 hooks with 40lb leader, 5/0 hooks with 50lb leader, 6/0 hooks with 60lb leader, and so on.

First, take the tag end of the leader line and slide it through the eye of an inline circle hook.

Bring the tag end of the line down to the bottom of the hook keeping the line flush to the hook shank.

Twist the line around the hook shank until you’ve done so about 6-7 times.

Take the opposite tag end and feed it back through the eye of the hook.

Then, cinch the line down and move the coils up with your finger.

When rigging the first hook, we fed the leader in through the front and out through the back.

We’re going to do the opposite on the second hook.

Slide the hook onto the leader line and lay the hooks down so they are facing the same direction.

Again, pinch the line down to the back of the hook shank and repeat the same process twisting the line around the hook 6-7 times.

Once that’s done, pinch the line and feed the tag end back through the front of the hook.

Hold the bottom hook in position and cinch the second knot down on the second hook.

Make sure to cut off the tag end down on the bottom hook.

Rigging Bait On The Double-Snell

I’m using a Slam Shady BOMBER for demonstration purposes rather than a frozen cigar minnow at the table.

You want the baits to drop down head first (tail end on the top hook and head on the bottom hook).

This ensures the weight is towards the bottom preventing the bait from spiraling on the way down.

On a cigar minnow, there are lateral lines going down the side of the fish.

Slide the bottom hook right below the gill plate on the fish.

Repeat the process with the second hook just higher up on the bait.

You want the hooks to face the same way so the bait appears natural on the descent.

I teamed up with Capt. B to learn more about the ins and outs of beach fishing!

We had multiple rods set up in a perfect spot on the Atlantic coast of Florida.

This video will cover rigging techniques, bait placement, and a bunch of other helpful little tips when it comes to catching more fish from the surf.

Check it all out below!!

The Ins and Outs of Beach Fishing [VIDEO]

➡Become A Better Angler While Saving Time & Money

Basic Bait Rig Setup

The first setup is the longest rod out for the day with two floats.

Capt. B prefers two floats on the longest rod out because that is where the bigger fish seem to hold.

We were looking for permit, resident pompano, or black drum.

Black drum do feed on the bottom but they’ll be attracted to the float color.

Capt. B rigs these hooks up with peeled shrimp and green fish gum for additional attraction.

He takes the shell off the shrimp just like you’re going to eat it for added scent.

Take pieces of shrimp roughly the size of your thumb and hook it right through the center.

Then take the fish gum and cut it into small triangles and place that on the hook after the shrimp.

When fishing with longer surf rods, you don’t want to whip the bait out there.

Instead, a lobbing motion to loft the bait out is best.

Set the drag loose so if a fish takes the bait, it won’t take your rod too.

Another thing to take note of is periodically checking your baits.

Olive snails are out there in the sand and will pull your bait down and take the shrimp off the hook without you knowing.

Furthermore, when a fish starts to tap your line and eat the hook, let the circle hooks do their job.

You should fish with circle hooks when setting and forgetting the rod – this is safer on both you and the fish.

When a fish takes the line, all you have to do is start reeling.

Pompano Rigs

Capt. B uses Salty’s Pompano Rigs for this type of fishing.

The rigs are made with 17lb fluorocarbon with a swivel on one end and a clip on the other.

We had 3 oz. pyramid sinkers on the smaller rods and a 4 oz. on the larger rods.

Try to use the lightest weight you can get away with in the current.

You can see the bites more and it is less drag on the fish when reeling it back in.

You also have less chance of losing the fish with the weight bouncing along the bottom.

If your line starts moving one way or the other, you probably need a heavier weight.

Wind & Current

If you get to a beach and want to see if there is current, throw out a rig without a bait just the weight.

Hold it in your hands and watch to see if it starts to tumble.

You’ll know pretty quickly if it is and this indicates current movement.

Another way is to pay attention to the foam in the water with each crashing wave.

If there is current, the foam will move down the trough pretty quickly.

We were also fishing on a rising tide which meant the big fish would be rolling in.

They want to come in and feed on top of sand bars close to the beach because they aren’t worried about getting stuck.

There will be enough water for them to chase bait on the bars and get back to deeper water.

Another thing to be mindful of is slack line.

Most anglers will think it is the current or there is no fish but often the whiting and pompano will take the bait and swim towards the beach.

If the line goes slack, reel it in.

Also, after you cast the line out and walk it back to the rod holder, keep your hand on the spool to prevent creating a bow in the line.

Tackle & Gear

The first big setup Capt. B had rigged up included the Penn Rival 7000 Spinning Reel on a 12’6 rod weighted for 4-8 oz.

Next, he had a Penn Battle III 4000 paired 7’6 rod and the Penn Battle III can be paired with any rod from 7’0 to 9’6″.

That is an all-purpose setup you can use pretty much anywhere in Florida to catch fish.

Moving down the line is a slightly lower-cost version of the Battle III.

Capt. B had a Shakespeare Ugly Stick rod paired with a Penn Fierce 4000.

Again, you can fish for anything with this setup from beginners to experienced anglers.

The biggest setup we were using included Capt. B’s favorite rod for surf fishing.

The rod is an Akios Fury FX 420 (3-piece pro series rod) that is super light for being 14 feet long.

That rod is paired up with a Penn Pursuit 6000 series.

It is always a great idea to have one short rod and one longer to fish multiple sections of the beach to find where those bites are coming from.

Packing Up & Storing Rigs

The first thing you need to do is remove the weight from the rig.

You do not want the weight to bang against the rod and cause microfractures.

The biggest mistake anglers make is taking the hooks and placing them through the guides of the rod.

This can damage the guide and cause further issues down the road.

With the pompano rigs that have two hooks, Capt. B takes one hook and feeds it through a guide but connects one hook to the other.

Then tighten down the line and no metal is touching the rod at all.

Capt. B charters trips from shore so if you’re in the Brevard County area be sure to hit him up for a trip!

➡Get 5/0 Owner Mutu Light Circle Hooks

➡Get 30lb Ande Monofilament Leader

You need a 4/0 or 5/0 circle hook depending on the size of the shrimp you are using and the fish you’re going after.

For this rig assembly, I use a Trilene knot to connect the hook to my 30lb monofilament leader that has a #4 split-shot attached.

You can bump down to 20lb monofilament leader if the fish are being a bit picky.

But a 30lb leader will provide you enough strength to reel in a big drum.

You can use live or dead shrimp for this rig but in my case, I had dead shrimp out with me on this trip.

Just remember this, “The dead-er the better” when it comes to fishing for black drum.

The additional scent will only help the black drum find your shrimp so you can catch more fish.

Pinch the tail off of the shrimp and then insert the hook point through the area that was pinched off and slide the hook through the body of the shrimp.

Then, pull the hook point through the shrimp and you are ready to start fishing.

As long as the shrimp is secure on your hook, then you’re good to go.

Conclusion

If you know there are black drum in a particular spot, grab some dead shrimp on your way out to the ramp!

These fish fight hard and are super fun to catch but are super finicky and picky about where they swim and what they eat.

Some or all of the gear mentioned above might already be in your tackle box!!

If not, head over to the shop and get everything you need to assemble this super simple black drum shrimp rig.

Featured Equipment:

On this particular trip, I was out fishing with my Dad in an isolated area that gets closed off at low tide.

We positioned ourselves with the intent to wait for the incoming tide when clean water and bait move through the area.

Also, we used lures on this trip but had other rigs set up for fishing live mud minnows under slip floats.

During low tide, we mainly target flounder that are holding in the shallows.

As the tide rises, that is when more trout and redfish will be around to cast to.

Low tide stages are an excellent time to target flounder.

Flounder are notorious for staging near chokepoints and ledges with depth changes, especially during an incoming tide.

All the bait and water coming in with the tide have to pass around chokepoints, which makes them the ideal spot to set up and target flounder.

They are ambush predators and will sit in holes at the bottom waiting to pick off bait swimming by.

Bait Rig

On this trip, my Dad used a modified Carolina Rig with a mud minnow on the end of it.

This is a very simple rig that you can just pitch out there and wait at the bottom for a bite.

As far as the rig I was using, I used a simple slip float rig setup.

At the top of your system will be your nail knot that contains the entire setup.

Right after that, I put a small bead on the system to protect the knot from the slip float.

It also keeps the entire system in place and stops it from moving far up the mainline.

Moving down the line, you have another bead after the slip float protecting it from the weight.

I use a standard 1/2 oz. trolling sinker.

Then connecting to the sinker, I have about 14 inches or so of leader line connected to the hook.

This is a very simple setup that is perfect for fishing tidal creeks with moving current.

Rigging Finger Mullet

The perfect size finger mullet is roughly 3-4 inches.

If you ever have the opportunity to cast net finger mullet near you, go ahead and give it a try.

As far as rigging finger mullet on a hook, you want to insert the hook point just below the mullet’s bottom lip and feed it up and out the top lip.

Now, you’ve got the best live bait for flounder all rigged up.

This is also an excellent bait for catching trout, redfish, snook, black drum, and more.

Rod & Reel Setup

The rod I prefer to use with this slip float system is the TFO Professional 7′ Medium Rod.

This is a versatile, do-it-all kind of fishing rod that bridges the gap between being a live bait rod or an artificial lure rod.

The tip on this rod is flexible enough to throw artificial lures all day and the backbone of it is strong enough to put some heat on fish if needed.

If you do choose to fish a heavier slip float system, then this rod can handle it.

I like to throw both live bait and artificial lures so this rod helps me get the best of both worlds.

As far as reels go, the Daiwa BG MQ 3000 is the ideal reel for this outfit.

The Daiwa BG MQ is super lightweight and extremely strong.

It is light enough to throw artificial lures all day and it has the strength to pull bigger fish away from heavy structure.

Additionally, I spool my reel up with 15lb PowerPro braided line.

PowerPro is my go-to but usually in 10lb so the reason for switching to 15lb is because of going back and forth between artificial lures and live bait.

You want to make sure you are covered if you have to pull a big fish out of intrusive structures.

Conclusion

best live bait rig for spring fishing

During low points of the tide cycle, it can be a great idea to throw on a slip float with a finger mullet or mud minnow for some doormat flounder!

Flounder fishing is all about positioning and patience.

Focus on putting yourself in the best place to cast towards flounder as the tide rolls in.

Booger Fishing is basically just taking live shrimp and breaking it up into “boogers” or small pieces and tossing out 3-5 boogers per shrimp.

After you’ve thrown out a dozen or more boogers, go ahead and toss out a shrimp on a hook (rigging explained below!).

We strategically picked a 2-foot deep flat with our baits placed at the bottom and down current and downwind.

We were out there targeting bonefish, bonnethead sharks, mangrove snapper, or just about anything else that would bite.

This is an easy way to stay close to home but also get some quick bites on live shrimp.

Chum Peppering

To pepper the area around you with shrimp, simply grab a few shrimp and cut or tear them into small little pieces.

You want to use the wind and current to bring the shrimp where you want them to go.

This is in an effort to attract predatory fish to that area so eventually, they will bite the shrimp that is on a hook.

Every few minutes throw a few pieces to your left, right, and center.

Spot Selection

On this particular day, the conditions were rough and tough to endure.

We chose this spot to fish because we knew it can be very productive on a high tide when the wind and tide are moving together in the same direction.

Additionally, we chose this spot because it was easily accessible for the large bay boat to get in and out.

Using the trolling motor, we were able to power onto the flat without disturbing the bottom.

We also knew to be closer to deeper water in case we needed to move out quickly.

You want to avoid disturbing the bottom at all costs.

Live Shrimp Rigging

We used Eagle Claw 1/0 Bait Saver Hook because of the little barbs on the hook shank that help keep the shrimp in place.

Leader material will depend on where you are fishing but a 20lb monofilament leader should do the trick.

Then, tie down the hook to the leader with whatever snug knot you feel most comfortable tying.

Make sure the tag end is tight and always leave a little bit on the end in case you hook into a big fish.

You don’t want that knot slipping.

Furthermore, we want our baits to stay at the bottom.

A non-intrusive way of doing this is with split-shot weights.

You could get away with just one split-shot but on bad days you might need two.

Split-shots are easy to hold onto your line and crimp using a pair of pliers.

You want to have the weights placed roughly 6 inches above the hook that way fish won’t see them.

As far as rigging the shrimp on the hook goes, we like to keep the tail on when fishing in Islamorada.

Also, we just scattered small pieces of shrimp around the entire area.

First, take the hook point and feed it just in between the tail of the shrimp on its underside.

Come through the belly and towards its head with the hook.

Once you are just over halfway through the shrimp, you can expose the hook point.

Now, you’ve got a shrimp rigged on a 1/0 hook ready to go.

The shrimp will lay on the bottom and kick around a little bit but stay tied down due to the split-shot weights.

As far as casting and catching fish with this rig, you can go ahead and sight cast at sharks, or you can cast it out and let it sit.

Conclusion

bonnethead shark lure

Don’t give up if the weather changes on you and you’re forced to shake things up!

You can always chum some shrimp pieces on a flat for bonnethead sharks, and mangrove snapper, amongst a host of other inshore fish.

Be sure to have this technique in your back pocket on your next trip out!

This catch is a prime example of how not to panic but to instead remain patient and calmly battle the fish.

If you are using light inshore saltwater tackle to hunt big game fish, then these tips are essential to maintaining a strong connection without putting too much pressure on the fish.

When fighting big fish from a kayak or paddlecraft, you are most likely going to get towed around.

The main thing you need to focus on keeping your rod low and at an angle away from the fish.

This lets you put pressure on the fish without adding too much tension to the line.

If you keep your fishing rod vertical in the air, the fish will tire out slower extending the time you have to fight it.

Additionally, turning and positioning yourself sideways to the fish creates more resistance against the fish.

The part that you do not want to and cannot rush is landing the fish.

This fish was caught using a simple frozen shrimp rig that we typically suggest to rig on jigheads or bait hooks.

What did you make of that insane catch?!?!

Battling big fish when you don’t anticipate it beforehand can be quite the surprise but it is no reason to panic.

Remember to stay calm, take your time, and maintain pressure on the fish to tire it out and land them!
