This simple bait rig hack will save you time and money while also putting you on more fish off the beach.
To assemble this rig, all you need is your bait hook of choice, cut pieces of fresh-dead shrimp, and FishBites.
The idea is to use the color scheme of shrimp and FishBites to mimic sandfleas or other baitfish sifting through the sand.
Firstly, this is one of the most accessible bait rigs you will be able to put together.
There are other bait options out there like live sand fleas, ghost shrimp, and clams or crabs.
But shrimp and FishBites are tough to beat!
The biggest reason why this bait hack is so beneficial is that it stays on your hook.
Sometimes, you can find yourself fishing on an incredibly rough day with intense surf and wind that can throw your bait off the hook on your casts.
Also, there are always small, pesky bait stealers like pufferfish, catfish, etc. that are trying to swipe your shrimp off the hook.

I wonder does pompano also gets affected by the full moon do they also feed at night even if is not cloudy or are they only a day time fish ?
Research reports that I’ve read suggest that they only feed during the day (from gill netting samples and fish stomach contents) but I believe that’s just due to them being a primarily sight feeder… the full moon could actually encourage night feeding, as they’ll be able to see a bit more with extra light.

I’m looking forward to listening to this presentation. One suggestion I just discovered was switching from the Fish Bites brand to the Magic Bait brand which is sold at Walmart. Tough as leather and three or four times as smelly. Fish bites gums up, softens and falls off much more quickly.
Interesting! Which model of fish bites were you using? Long Lasting or Fast Release?
I will have to check. The problem was so bad (2 different times) that I called Fish Bites customer service and they sent me 2 replacement bags the first time and 3 the most recent time. Even the latest replacement packages they sent swell, gum and fall off quickly and the scent is nowhere as strong as Magic Bait. Using Magic Bait on the beach a couple weeks ago on a Chinese metal jig, I caught 110 fish for the day (yes, I keep count!)… pompano, flounder, blues, blue runners, whitings, croakers, ladies, jacks, and moons. And guys fishing with only bait, caught far, far less than with the jig tipped with Magic Bait.
Cool trick, definitely works. I’ve also heard about using salted baits (shrimp, clams and squid). Any thoughts on that? I’ve also heard of people using the salted squid tentacles as trailers on bucktails. I’m going from landlocked to full on beach bum in the next couple of months. I’m trying to learn as much as possible.
I asked Bama Beach Bum about using salted baits and he said he didn’t see much difference from the real thing. He prefer the freshest baits over anything else.
