How To Tie The Palomar Knot

Gear Needed:

• Daiwa D Shock Spinning Combo
• Size #1 Hook

This is a universal rig that is as close as you can get to a guarantee no matter where you’re fishing.

We’re not going to talk specific species.

It’s all about hitting the water to catch something to get tight lines.

If you’re just getting into saltwater fishing, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment.

As a matter of fact, simple is better.

Recommended Gear Outfit

Combos are a great choice for beginners.

We have an excellent combo available in our tackle shop – the Daiwa D Shock Spinning Combo.

The rod is a 7-foot Medium Power Spinning Rod combined with a spinning reel spooled with 12-lb monofilament.

They are very inexpensive and will get the job done.

Universal Saltwater Rig

Because the reel is spooled with monofilament, there is no need for leaders or pre-tied rigs.

On the end of the line, tie a size #1 hook using a Palomar Knot.

Then about six inches up from that, we’re going to put a small split-shot weight.

The weight of the split-shot will depend on the depth you’re fishing as well as the speed of the current.

That’s all there is to it.

Bait Choices

As far as the bait to use, frozen shrimp is always a great choice.

Yes you can use live shrimp but frozen will get the job done.

Break the shrimp up into little pieces and slide them onto the hook.

Drop the bait down near hard structure like docks, bridges, oysters, etc. – spots where there are all sorts of fish swimming below.

Spot Selection

The best places to start with this rig are near bridges or piers.

These are big structures that hold lots of fish.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when fishing off of piers is casting way out in front of them.

The fish are right beneath your feet close to the structure.

A common error here is staying in one spot for too long.

If you’re fishing one bridge piling without any luck, pick up and try a different spot.

Keep moving until you find the bite.

Once you find one fish, more often than not you’ll find more.

As you can see there are a TON of different fish swimming around with all sorts of rocks and rubble below.

This structure attracts all types of life.

Sheepshead, grunts, mangrove snapper and even some grouper mixed in as well.

Although you can’t see many grouper on camera, they were there.

One of the red grouper down there couldn’t resist the Prawn USA Junior.

That strike I was able to capture on film!

The rest of the fish didn’t seem to react at all to the strike.

This just goes to show that if you find the right spots, you can catch fish after fish.

These fish were constantly moving and on the hunt for something to eat.

A critical component to this type of fishing is using a weedless rig.

You can do this with both live or artificial baits.

How To Rig Clams For Surf Fishing [VIDEO]

Take a large pair of pliers or something you can use to smash the clams open.

Pick the shells off and toss them aside where you won’t be walking!

Once you get the clam out of the shell, cut it into small pieces starting with the ‘foot’ of the clam.

This is what the clam uses to dig down into the sand.

You will be able to get 3-4 pieces of bait from each clam.

The last bit of clam is not as firm so you will need to thread it around the hook several times to keep it on there.

When you have your baits cut up, take the foot piece and slide that onto your hook.

Roll it over and hook it again through the top of the bait.

With the last piece you cut, slide that onto the hook and continue to wrap it on the hook until you’ve created a ‘clam-meatball’ on the hook.

Then, tip the hook with a piece of FishGum to secure the bait on the hook.

Tactics To Rig Live Shrimp For More Strikes [VIDEO]

Live Shrimp Rig:

• Rod: 7’6 Medium Power Fast Action
• Reel: 2500-3000 size spinning reel
• Line: 10lb PowerPro Braid
• Leader: 15lb Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon
• Hook: 1/0 Circle Hook

If fish see too much going on in your rig, they won’t bite the hook.

When you’re fishing tight to docks, bridges, and similar structure, the rig shown above is the way to go.

You’ll want to go with a light line and small hooks.

Hook size depends on the size of the shrimp you’ve got.

First, pinch the tail of the shrimp off – just the fan section.

This helps release scent from the shrimp and keeps it alive.

Slide the hook through one side of the body and out through the other.

Not only does this rig release more scent, but it also is easier to cast the shrimp farther using this method.

How To Catch Your Own Fiddler Crabs [VIDEO]

Fiddler crabs are tough to come by when it’s colder out because they burrow in the ground.

The good news is you can catch your own – in the right areas!

First, you need to look for shorelines with soft sand and scattered debris.

Grass, rocks, and tree limbs paired with soft sand are the best spots to look at.

Muddy backwater shorelines near boat ramps are also hotspots for fiddlers.

Next, you want to look for nickel and dime-sized holes in the ground.

These are tell-tale signs of fiddler crabs in the area.

Ideally, you want to find the holes with fresh dirt just outside of them.

That indicates a fiddler crab has just recently started to burrow there.

Whatever tool you have to dig them up, insert the tool at a slight angle next to the hole and pop the dirt up to lift it out.

The fiddler crab might start running or it will still be in the dirt.

Catching Mullet With A Cast Net [VIDEO]

The net I use to catch mullet is a 6-foot cast net with a 1/4-inch diameter mesh.

To start, slowly creep your vessel into the shallows using the current or wind to drift toward the bait.

That prevents you from having to constantly adjust the trolling motor.

If you don’t have wind or current to assist you, you can use your trolling motor to get up to speed and shut it down once you feel close enough to drift toward the bait.

Throw the net out once you’re close to the bait and let it sink down to the bottom.

Then, pull the net in swiftly so it closes around the mullet.

Another helpful tip is to have a bucket of water right next to you to dump the mullet into once you bring the net in.

Then you can transfer them over to your live well without getting your vessel all dirty.

Gear Used On This Trip:

• 2/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook
• 20lb Berkley Vanish Fluorocarbon with a 40lb tippet
• 20lb PowerPro Braid

For this technique, start with a hook and a live shrimp.

Pinch the tail off of the shrimp and slide the hook through the meaty end of the remaining tail portion.

This releases scent while also creating a more streamlined rig allowing you to cast more accurately.

This approach is great for finding fish along shorelines or mangroves.

Keep your eyes peeled for movement and cast the shrimp to the fish.

You can also pitch the shrimp up into small pockets and cut-outs along the shoreline.

When you’re fishing murky water in an area without any grass, look for dark spots on the bottom.

That usually indicates a fish.

No matter your skill level, this is an effective way to get tight lines quickly.

All you need is live or dead shrimp.

If you don’t have shrimp, Gulp! is an excellent alternative for this rig.

The rig is called a “Dropper Rig”.

There are a few advantages to this type of bait rig as opposed to others commonly used.

Because the hook is above the weight, you’ll be able to feel the bites much better.

Also, when the hook is above the weight, the hook is the first thing to be pulled when you go to set the hook.

For the rig I am using, I had a #4 live bait hook but any type of bait hook will work as long as it matches the size of your bait.

Keep the hook size on the smaller side.

As far as weights, I am fishing with a 1 oz. bank sinker.

If you’re having a tough day or you’re fishing with beginners, this is one of the best and easiest ways to get tight lines.
