➡ How To Tie The Palomar Knot

Gear Needed:

This is a universal rig that is as close as you can get to a guarantee no matter where you’re fishing.

We’re not going to talk specific species.

It’s all about hitting the water to catch something to get tight lines.

If you’re just getting into saltwater fishing, you don’t need fancy, expensive equipment.

As a matter of fact, simple is better.

Recommended Gear Outfit

Combos are a great choice for beginners.

We have an excellent combo available in our tackle shop – the Daiwa D Shock Spinning Combo.

The rod is a 7-foot Medium Power Spinning Rod combined with a spinning reel spooled with 12-lb monofilament.

They are very inexpensive and will get the job done.

Universal Saltwater Rig

Because the reel is spooled with monofilament, there is no need for leaders or pre-tied rigs.

On the end of the line, tie a size #1 hook using a Palomar Knot.

Then about six inches up from that, we’re going to put a small split-shot weight.

The weight of the split-shot will depend on the depth you’re fishing as well as the speed of the current.

That’s all there is to it.

Bait Choices

As far as the bait to use, frozen shrimp is always a great choice.

Yes you can use live shrimp but frozen will get the job done.

Break the shrimp up into little pieces and slide them onto the hook.

Drop the bait down near hard structure like docks, bridges, oysters, etc. – spots where there are all sorts of fish swimming below.

Spot Selection

The best places to start with this rig are near bridges or piers.

These are big structures that hold lots of fish.

One of the biggest mistakes people make when fishing off of piers is casting way out in front of them.

The fish are right beneath your feet close to the structure.

A common error here is staying in one spot for too long.

If you’re fishing one bridge piling without any luck, pick up and try a different spot.

Keep moving until you find the bite.

Once you find one fish, more often than not you’ll find more.

So much life is starting to show up below the bridges I had to capture some underwater views!

I dropped a camera down beneath a bridge roughly 1 mile from shore in the Gulf to get a glimpse of the world down there.

This gives us awesome insight into what kinds of structure and species are down there!

Prawn USA Junior Rig:

As you can see there are a TON of different fish swimming around with all sorts of rocks and rubble below.

This structure attracts all types of life.

Sheepshead, grunts, mangrove snapper and even some grouper mixed in as well.

Although you can’t see many grouper on camera, they were there.

One of the red grouper down there couldn’t resist the Prawn USA Junior.

That strike I was able to capture on film!

The rest of the fish didn’t seem to react at all to the strike.

This just goes to show that if you find the right spots, you can catch fish after fish.

These fish were constantly moving and on the hunt for something to eat.

A critical component to this type of fishing is using a weedless rig.

You can do this with both live or artificial baits.

Do you want to see more underwater camera footage like this?

Let me know what I should capture next in the comments below!!

Live Shrimp Rig:

If fish see too much going on in your rig, they won’t bite the hook.

When you’re fishing tight to docks, bridges, and similar structure, the rig shown above is the way to go.

You’ll want to go with a light line and small hooks.

Hook size depends on the size of the shrimp you’ve got.

First, pinch the tail of the shrimp off – just the fan section.

This helps release scent from the shrimp and keeps it alive.

Slide the hook through one side of the body and out through the other.

Not only does this rig release more scent, but it also is easier to cast the shrimp farther using this method.

Most people will take the shrimp and slide the hook right through the middle of the body.

This is actually the WORST way to rig live or dead shrimp.

It will cause the shrimp to spin underwater creating a totally unnatural presentation.

Another mistake anglers make is using the wrong size hook.

They’ll use a hook that is way too big for the shrimp.

If you use a hook that’s too big, you’ll weigh down the shrimp causing an unnatural presentation.

You want to instead match the size of the hook to your bait.

How should you rig live shrimp when fishing close to bridges or similar structures?

On this trip, I decided to shake things up and target some local bridges armed with shrimp.

In this video, you’ll get to see how I was rigging live shrimp and WHY.

Setup Used On This Trip:

Rigging Live Shrimp

The reason for fishing with a Hoss Football Jighead is to quickly and easily switch back and forth between live or artificial shrimp.

I can use the same rig for either and don’t have to switch rods.

First, grab a shrimp and pinch the tail off.

That releases additional scent while keeping the shrimp alive.

Feed the hook point through the tail end of the shrimp you tore off just as you would a soft plastic lure.

Push the shrimp up and over the barbs and that is how easy it is to rig a shrimp on a jighead!

From there, you can cast this out close to bridges or wherever you plan to target fish.

You can feed the hook point through either the top or bottom of the shrimp.

The process is the same for either end.

I recommend having the hook point exposed on the bottom of shrimp with longer jigheads.

If the hook shank is a bit longer on the jigheads you’re using, rig the shrimp with the natural curve of its body and out through the bottom.

Bridge Fishing

On this particular trip, I was targeting black drum in roughly 15-20 feet of water next to a bridge using my side scanner.

I located a school of drum thanks to the side scan and dropped shrimp right on top of them.

I caught between 15 and 20 fish in total on this trip and my arms were sore by the end of the day!

Moreover, I went with a 1/8 oz. jighead because there was little to no current where I was fishing.

If you’re fishing with too heavy a weight and you drop it right on top of the fish, it will sink very fast which might spook the entire school or miss them if it’s too fast.

You never know what you’re going to run into out there!!

You simply can’t go wrong with rigging live shrimp on a hook for inshore saltwater fishing!

It’s so easy even kids can do it (as you’ll see with young Shauna catching lots of snapper in this video).

Everything eats a shrimp so this is a fantastic method for quick tight lines for all beginner anglers or those looking to help their kids catch a fish.

Take a look at this sneak peek from our Inshore Fishing Mastery Course!!

Tying The Rig

In most cases, the majority of strikes will come right at the bottom or close to it.

All you need for this simple shrimp rig is a 20lb Monofilament leader going down to a circle hook, with a split-shot weight, and live shrimp.

You want enough weight to keep the shrimp on the bottom but still light enough for the current to move it along the shoreline.

To start, tie a snug knot with the leader and circle hook.

For this video, I made use of the Orvis Knot which is a super strong and small snug knot.

The split shot should go about 10-12 inches up from the hook.

Whether you are fishing with experienced anglers or children, you should always be using circle hooks.

If for whatever reason, you are not looking or holding the rod and a fish takes the hook, it won’t become gut-hooked with a circle hook.

The fish will end up hooking itself in the corner of its mouth.

That is not the case with other traditional hook styles.

Rigging Live Shrimp

If you look closely at the shrimp’s head, you can see the darker material in its head which is its brain.

You want to slide the hook in between the brain and the eyes but underneath the spine on top.

This will hold the shrimp tight to the hook without injuring the shrimp.

The goal is to keep the shrimp’s appearance as natural as possible.

In the water, the shrimp will have a free range of motion enhancing the overall appeal to predatory fish.

And when hooked this way, shrimp stay alive on the hook for a very long time.

Casting & Fishing Live Shrimp

I knew there was a deeper trough with fallen tree limbs and other structure in front of us on this day.

Our objective was to get our baits down low to the structure while also using the current to make a sweep over the entire trough.

I purposefully cast a bit more to the right to let the current take the shrimp from right to left.

Conclusion

Kids Fishing

So easy, even a kid can do it!!

Live shrimp is one of the easiest and most effective ways to get tight lines and FAST!

Everything out there eats shrimp so if you ever want to take your kids fishing, pick up some shrimp!

Oh, and be sure to use circle hooks when fishing with live bait – it’s safer for you and for the fish!!

One of your most valuable assets on the pier is LIVE BAIT.

But being up on the pier, it can be a challenge to keep your bait alive and contained so you can continue to set lively baits out all day long.

Active baits with signs of life are critically important to your success.

Here’s how you should manage your live bait when fishing from the pier!

You can catch your own live bait from the pier and fish that way.

OR you can go the easier route and come prepared with live shrimp or live finfish.

Live shrimp is one of the best pier fishing baits for redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and others alike.

A pro tip is to bring your own live shrimp and then in between action you can try and catch other baitfish around the pier.

Live Bait Buckets

Live bait buckets with aerators are the easiest and best method for keeping live bait alive throughout the day.

The aerators on live bait buckets are designed to keep the water oxygenated so the shrimp stay alive longer.

More often than not, the live shrimp will die in hot water that sits out in the sun on the pier.

If the water your shrimp are in is getting too warm, then you can dump ice in there to cool it down.

You want to keep the water temperature on the cooler side.

Additionally, any live bait you catch while out on the pier can go right into a live bait bucket as well for use later on.

This will help keep your baits super lively when you go to put them on a hook.

Can You Put Live Shrimp & Finfish In The Same Bucket?

You can with certain baitfish but not with others.

Cigar minnows or mullet can go right in the same bucket as your live shrimp.

But I would recommend against putting pinfish or croakers in with the live shrimp.

These fish tend to eat the live shrimp when you mix them together.

BONUS: Pro Tip For Live Bait

On those brutally hot days, the water temperature in your bucket could heat up to dangerous levels and kill those shrimp.

For these situations, I recommend dropping in a Shrimp-Buddies tablet to maintain proper oxygen levels.

All you do is drop 1 or 2 in your bait bucket and it helps to oxygenate the water.

These tips apply if you’re holding the shrimp in either a live well, a bucket, or even a cooler.

#1 – Keep The Water Cool

Keeping the water cool and regulated is important.

If you don’t have a live well, then a cooler will have the necessary insulation to maintain stable temperatures.

You don’t want the water to get too hot or to get too cold.

If you are using the live well on your boat, the best thing you can do is repeatedly put new water in the well and make sure the water is properly circulating.

Another idea is to have additional ice packs or frozen water bottles that you can put along the sides to keep it cool as well.

You DO NOT want to add ice directly to the water.

That will dilute the water and is another way the shrimp can die.

#2 – Aerator

For my own purposes, I’m using the Engel Live Bait Cooler with the Rechargeable Aerator Pump.

Having some type of aerator with you can only work in your favor.

Anything that can keep the water oxygenated, especially on those warmer days, is critical to keeping shrimp alive longer.

#3 – Avoid Putting Your Hands In The Water

Try and avoid putting your hands directly in the water with the shrimp.

You may have oils or other substances on your hands that can contaminate the water.

If you can, have a small net handy to take shrimp out of the cooler.

It’s also beneficial to have a mesh net like the one in this Engel cooler because it gives the shrimp something to hold onto when the boat moves with the waves.

You may have noticed in the past that after you get your bait and race over to the spot to start fishing, you’re shrimp are all dead.

That’s probably because they were bouncing around in the live well without anything to grab hold of.

#4 – Additives

Furthermore, you can also mix in some additives and other solutions to regulate the water.

The additives actually remove harmful things like ammonia and the shrimp waste that build up in the cooler.

This really helps keep the shrimp alive and more lively.

Just make sure you are using a saltwater additive if you choose to do so.

Time Of The Year

Winter is the right time to use live shrimp or shrimp presentations.

Most of the mullet have moved into larger sounds and bodies of water.

Shrimp of any size is your best bait option for the colder months, even artificial will work!

Moving into spring and then summer is when you want to use mullet or finfish as bait.

During the spring and summer, there are tons of shrimp hatches which overload our waters with millions of shrimp.

This is an ideal time to use finger mullet to target inshore fish.

Shrimp presentations tend to blend into the masses and won’t stand out as a mullet would in spring or summer.

Moving into Fall, mullet are going to be bigger but so are the shrimp as well.

Once those first few cold fronts roll through in the fall, you should use live shrimp.

There are not as many ‘trash’ fish around to steal your bait as there will be in other seasons.

Also, shrimp tend to be a bit bigger during this time and larger meals are exactly what these fish want.

They don’t have to expend a lot of energy to chase down a meal.

Species To Target With Either Bait

When it comes to speckled trout, shrimp is your best bet.

If you want to reel in TONS of trout, then shrimp is the way to go.

But if you want to target bigger trophy trout, then you have to use larger finger mullet.

No matter the size of the redfish, my favorite bait to use to target them is shrimp.

Mainly all year round, shrimp is the way to go for targeting all sizes of redfish.

However, I will switch over to finfish in the springtime in an effort to set my presentation apart when shrimp are extremely prevalent.

To complete the slam, the best type of bait for flounder is finger mullet.

Anywhere in the 4-7-inch range works best.

Flounder are ambush predators and love it when they spot a BIG meal that is easy to get.

The main part of their diet is finfish, especially when the flounder get bigger.

Conclusion

It’s all about analyzing fish biology as well as seasonal trends.

Shrimp works all year round but excels in the colder months.

Mullet is an excellent bait for flounder in particular and is best used in spring and summer when shrimp hatches are everywhere.
