JJ and I set out to target inshore redfish.

He wanted to dial into the redfish bite during these early days of spring.

He hasn’t had any issues finding trout – so he wanted to learn more to specifically target redfish in spring.

On days like this, redfish are typically going to sit closer to the grassline.

No matter what structure you’re fishing (oyster beds, grasslines, rocks, etc.), you want to fish as tight to it as possible.

You should try and move closer to effectively position yourself for an accurate cast.

You want your baits as close to shore or as tight to structure as possible.

That is where the predatory fish are hanging out.

Chances are most of the strikes will happen within a few cranks of the reel.

If you’re working a shoreline, take notice of slight changes or things that stand out.

Cast there!!!

I’m talking about the WIND and the SUN.

Not only will air temperatures go up and down in the winter, but so will the water temperatures.

These fish are going to move around accordingly.

If you don’t move around with them, you’ll have tough days out on the water.

Sun

The sun plays an overlooked role in wintertime planning.

It determines if the water temperature will slightly rise in areas depending on how exposed the sun is.

On a sunny day, the water temperatures will increase and the fish will tend to move up shallow to feed.

If the sun is blocked on a cloudy day, lots of times those fish will stay deep.

Wind

The bottom line with the wind is looking for wind-protected areas – always!

Wind causes water temperatures to drop in affected areas.

Fish are looking for the warmest possible water in the winter.

The ultimate recipe here is to combine the wind and sun to have them both in your favor in a given spot.

Lure Selection

Everyone has their favorite redfish lures.

But for me, I’m always going to grab a small shrimp imitation.

Pretty much everything eats a shrimp and that is what’s most abundant during winter.

Our Prawn USA Junior is my go-to lure.

If I’m fishing in less than 3 feet of water, I’ll use a super light jighead.

A 1/10 oz. Z-Man Pro ShroomZ jighead or a 1/8-1/16 oz. Hoss Helix Hook is best for the shallows.

Any deeper than 3 feet, and I’ll go with a Hoss Weedless Football Jigheads.

The weight there will determine on current speed and depth.

F.R.E.D. stands for ‘Fooling Redfish Every Day’.

It is a pink lure with a silver flake designed to stand out and catch the eyes of redfish.

I’ve found that when fish aren’t committing to your standard white or natural lure colors, bright lures that stand out are the way to go.

Something that looks different that they might not have seen before can trigger that bite.

This was the case on a recent trip.

I leaned on the F.R.E.D. the Jerk lure to catch some MONSTER redfish.

I had it rigged on a 3/0 Hoss Helix Hook weighing 1/8 oz.

Throughout the fall, floating grass is a problem so going weedless is best to avoid frustrations.

Throw a little Dr. Juice Saltwater Slam Scent on the lure and you’re ready to go!

As far as this trip, the first fish I hooked into bit the Nub Rig after a puffer or smaller fish bit the tail off.

These redfish need to eat before winter comes!

Later in the trip, I hooked into a monster fish pushing 40 inches.
