It was pretty nasty and windy out on the water.

But, I believed the redfish would be in a springtime trend due to a recent warming period.

So, I hit the water with Insider Member JJ McCray to work on positioning and talk about finding fish in these types of tough fishing situations!

Check out the entire trip including all of the lessons learned below!!

JJ and I set out to target inshore redfish.

He wanted to dial into the redfish bite during these early days of spring.

He hasn’t had any issues finding trout – so he wanted to learn more to specifically target redfish in spring.

On days like this, redfish are typically going to sit closer to the grassline.

No matter what structure you’re fishing (oyster beds, grasslines, rocks, etc.), you want to fish as tight to it as possible.

You should try and move closer to effectively position yourself for an accurate cast.

You want your baits as close to shore or as tight to structure as possible.

That is where the predatory fish are hanging out.

Chances are most of the strikes will happen within a few cranks of the reel.

If you’re working a shoreline, take notice of slight changes or things that stand out.

Cast there!!!

➡Beach Fishing Tips & Tactics [How To Find Spots!]

FEATURED RODS:

FEATURED REELS:

RIGS & ACCESSORIES:

This time we experimented with different colors of FishGum.

Capt. B relies on FishGum for a few reasons and never fishes from the beach without it.

We had a bunch of different colors of FishGum to experiment with on this trip.

Lately when I’ve been fishing with Capt. B, we’ve absolutely crushed it.

So we were hoping for more of the same.

Our test focused on the yellow FishGum versus the Purple/Green color.

The bite was absolutely non-stop.

Fish after fish hit our baits the second we tossed them out there.

There were TWO main takeaways from this trip.

Number one, both colors of FishGum caught fish.

Color was not a major factor in triggering bites.

We’ll need to do more testing to definitively say one color was better than the other.

Finding a quality spot was the major determining factor.

If you put your baits out in front of fish, you’ll get them to eat.

The second lesson learned is you don’t have to go out and buy a big surf fishing reel.

For many years, I avoided buying a traditional surf fishing rod.

On this trip, I put a typical inshore reel (3000-size) on my surf fishing rod.

I had both the Daiwa BG MQ 3000 and the BG 3000 outfitted on both of my surf setups.

Both of which had 20lb braided line on the spools.

If you are going after bigger fish, you’ll want to upgrade the reels.

But for bluefish, pompano, or whiting, these setups are excellent.

Follow the birds to find the fish!!!

LURES USED ON THIS TRIP:

Where there’s birds, there’s likely fish.

Both birds and predatory fish want to corner and attack schools of bait.

On my last trip out, I saw a bunch of birds congregating in one area.

It was murky and there wasn’t really any water movement at all.

But if there are signs of life, it’s always worth throwing a few casts.

I’m sure glad I went over to check it out!

I ended up cruising up and down the shoreline plucking off redfish as I went.

The Z-Man Kicker CrabZ and Wake Bait were the ticket.

A cold front dropped the water temperature so the crab lure dragged on the bottom was the ultimate weapon on this trip.

Also, flooded grasslines are an excellent spot to find redfish.

Be sure to cast as close as you can to these areas and look for signs of feeding fish.

More often than not, you can call those fish out to strike!

Go ahead and let me know what you though of this trip down in the comments section!!

Standard Must-Haves

There are standard lures that typically work anywhere in the country and are staples among inshore anglers.

These are a 3-4 inch shrimp imitation and a 3-4 inch paddletail lure.

If you get these two lures and their retrieves mastered, you’ll reel in all sorts of inshore fish.

Pre-rigged shrimp lures restrict how and where you can fish certain lures.

You’re pretty much stuck with fishing that lure however it was packaged.

Loose, un-rigged shrimp lures provide more versatility.

You can rig them however you want based on the situation.

The same concept applies to paddletail lures.

These two types of lures are insanely versatile and are the two must-haves for all types of inshore saltwater fishing.

Master these two lures and you’re well on your way to crushing inshore fish.

The Ultimate Spring Bundle includes the Slam Shady 2.0 Paddletail as well as Prawn USA Junior Original lures.

Topwater Lures

Topwater lures are nothing short of FUN.

Watching a fish launch out of the water to inhale your lure is so cool.

But, it is also a super effective way to catch fish.

You can cover a ton of ground – which is especially handy in the spring.

These fish are going to be on the move.

You want to make sure you have a topwater lure in your arsenal.

The Greenback Moonwalker Topwater Lure is included in the Spring Bundle.

Jerk Shads & Slashbaits

The Skinny Lipper is a hard-body subsurface lure that can also be worked closely to a topwater lure.

It’s a versatile option that can be retrieved multiple ways.

The Slam Shady Skinny Lipper is in this bundle.

Additionally, our NEW Polk County Tweaker jerk lure is included in this bundle.

This lure just screams versatility.

It excels in finesse situations but will trigger strikes just about anywhere.

The Tweaker in the Alabama Leprechaun color is in the Spring Bundle.

Another lure featured in this bundle is the split-tail jerk shad.

Specifically, the Slam Shady Jerk.

These lures are best in calm, clear conditions.

Additional Items

You’ll also get all the necessary rigging hooks needed to effectively fish the soft plastic lures included in this bundle.

A weedless option in the Hoss Helix Hooks as well as traditional jigheads in the Hoss Round Eye Jigheads.

Plus, you’ll get a pair of our Braid Cutting Split-Ring Scissors.

INSIDERS: you get over 50% OFF the products in this bundle!!!

Non-Insiders: You still get an amazing deal at over 35% off. But you would save EVEN MORE as an Insider. Why pay more? Join the Insider Club today.

Struggling to find redfish & trout in South Carolina during the wintertime?

John’s Setup:

It was a gorgeous 65-degree day up in Charleston, South Carolina.

John started off throwing the Z-Man Salty Ned ShrimpZ in the Slam Shady color.

This time of the year, schools of inshore fish will stack up along marsh systems and creeks.

You will find them in deeper water and on those super sunny days they’ll be on the flats as well.

The key is finding warmer water.

Have you ever been stuck not knowing when to choose light vs. bright lures?

Our Slam Shady Jerk Shad is a white lure with silver flecks while the F.R.E.D. color is pink all around.

How do you know when to fish with one over the other?

Let’s dive into it!

Featured Gear:

When water temperatures drop down to a moderate temperature in the spring and fall, 5-inch jerk shad lures become my go-to profile.

It matches the bait in the water as those predatory fish become more and more aggressive.

Jerk shads also provide immense versatility.

The Slam Shady is a white lure with silver flecks throughout the body.

This lure color is responsible for bringing more fish over the side of the boat than any other of our proprietary colors.

It is an all-purpose lure color that works in every single water clarity and situation.

The other color we’ll be discussing is the F.R.E.D. lure color.

It is a pink lure all around with silver and black flake throughout the body.

This color stands out amongst the crowd.

When To Use ONE Over the OTHER

Almost always, the Slam Shady is going to be the go-to lure color.

It is a universal lure color that works anytime, anywhere.

However, there are times when you want to go to an even brighter lure like the F.R.E.D.

When thinking about baitfish, they typically are made up of three colors.

White, a lighter silver, and a dark-colored back.

The Slam Shady does an excellent job of mimicking that, however, it does change when you’re fishing with baitfish EVERYWHERE.

The Slam Shady tends to blend in with the crowd a bit.

In that situation, switch over to the F.R.E.D. lure color.

The brighter lure amongst a sea of silver baitfish gives those fish something to hone in on and pinpoint your lure.

Another situation to switch over to the F.R.E.D. is when you’re fishing in off-color water.

By that, I mean tannic water that is slightly stained and a bit muddy.

The F.R.E.D. is my go-to lure color whenever I see that I’ll be fishing in that water.

Moreover, the F.R.E.D. shines first thing in the morning or late in the evening.

Right as the sun is peaking over the horizon or falling in the evening, the F.R.E.D. is a reliable choice.

How can you still get tight lines after a late-spring cold front rolls through??

But that doesn’t mean the fish won’t eat!

I hit the water with a few Insider Members and we picked up on a solid bite.

We were faced with a late-season front that often drops the air temperature which can impact the bite.

The majority of strikes on this day came later in the afternoon after the sun had the chance to heat things up.

All of us were getting bites at this point, but it was not until I slowed down the retrieves that I hooked into a solid redfish.

If you’re ever unsure of what lure color to use, you can always trust a WHITE fishing lure.

White or Slam Shady are the best lure options when fishing in new areas.

White lures tend to take on the color of the water while standing out in a natural presentation.

The bite wasn’t consistent but fish were willing to strike and eat lures.

I tossed out the Rapala Skitter Walk because it does a great job of calling fish in over the rough, windy conditions.

You can work Skitter Walk lures much slower than you would a Wake Bait.

During windy, cooler days, that can be the difference to get strikes from lethargic fish.

A little while later into the trip, one of the Insider Members I was fishing with caught their Personal Best Speckled Trout at 26.5 inches!

It was caught on the Alabama Leprechaun Jerk Shad rigged using a Hoss Helix Hook.

Trends are how to find inshore saltwater fish more than knowing certain spots.

Fish are often on the move so locking into specific patterns is a sure-fire way to spark a bite.

Here’s an example of a recent practice trip before a tournament down in Yankeetown, Florida!

I started this trip working on a trend I had picked up on the day before.

These fish were holding very tight to structure so I found an oyster bar and started to work the area around it.

This would be the plan for the rest of the trip.

I made sure to use a weighted weedless presentation in order to get as close as possible to structure.

As I moved from oyster to oyster, I did throw some casts out to the flats and similar areas but there were zero bites.

Later on, I came across a spoil island that lead to the major surprise of the trip!

All of the fish so far were caught on a 4-inch Z-Man Slam Shady Jerk Shad up until this point.

To work the spoil island a bit better, I tossed the Mulligan on a Z-Man Spinnerbait.

The water was a bit off-color and the wind was causing some choppy conditions.

I switched to the spinnerbait to give my presentation a bit more flash and appeal.

After pulling in a solid redfish, I figured why not cast in the exact same spot.

And off went my drag!!!

It was a SNOOK!

I don’t get too many chances at catching snook up in my neck of the woods so this was quite the thrill for me.
