So much life is starting to show up below the bridges I had to capture some underwater views!

I dropped a camera down beneath a bridge roughly 1 mile from shore in the Gulf to get a glimpse of the world down there.

This gives us awesome insight into what kinds of structure and species are down there!

Take a look!!

Prawn USA Junior Rig:

As you can see there are a TON of different fish swimming around with all sorts of rocks and rubble below.

This structure attracts all types of life.

Sheepshead, grunts, mangrove snapper and even some grouper mixed in as well.

Although you can’t see many grouper on camera, they were there.

One of the red grouper down there couldn’t resist the Prawn USA Junior.

That strike I was able to capture on film!

The rest of the fish didn’t seem to react at all to the strike.

This just goes to show that if you find the right spots, you can catch fish after fish.

These fish were constantly moving and on the hunt for something to eat.

A critical component to this type of fishing is using a weedless rig.

You can do this with both live or artificial baits.

Do you want to see more underwater camera footage like this?

Let me know what I should capture next in the comments below!!

Gear Used:

The goal of this trip was to use some bait chum to cast net live pinfish to target snapper.

We picked out a few spots with rocks and corals in about 20 feet of water.

After a few throws of the net, we had plenty of pinfish in the live well.

But, I wanted to start by bouncing the Prawn Junior artificial shrimp lure over the rocks to see if anything would bite.

I also do this to get a feel for the structure in front of me and know where the big rocks are.

I was thrilled to hook into a solid mangrove snapper on my second cast.

Dinner was already in the boat before we tossed out live bait!

So to begin the trip, Joe and I both thought pinfish would be the ticket.

But because I reeled that snapper in, I decided to stick with artificial shrimp lures.

Joe went ahead with live pinfish.

All in all, the Prawn dominated live pinfish and got way more strikes and hooked into more fish.

For many years, I thought live bait was essential for snapper and grouper fishing.

But as you can see, jigging artificial shrimp lures up and down is the way to go.

On-The-Water Action

We picked up a few cigar minnows using sabiki bait rigs and then moved off to find deeper water.

The strategy was to drop down a bait roughly 4 feet from the bottom and wait for those strikes.

I started off throwing a Power Prawn USA shrimp lure on a Hoss Weedless Football Jighead.

I felt a few solid swipes but nothing took the hook so I switched that out for a cigar minnow on a bottom rig.

After switching to live bait, we hit a few reefs and got on some solid action.

A bit later on, I hooked into something HUGE that would not give me any slack.

It ended up popping off but I was prepared with pre-tied double snell rigs I prepped the night before.

A pod of dolphin were swarming around the kayaks hoping to steal our fish before we could land them.

None of this would be possible without the help of Smart Fishing Spots.

It is incredibly easy to find spots just like this filled with tons of BIG fish!

All you need is the Smart Fishing Spots platform.

With the click of a button, all of the artificial reefs in any area pop up on the screen.

This reveals INSTANT HOTSPOTS and ideal locations for nearshore and offshore fishing.

A little while later, I hooked into another giant.

Turns out, it was a GIANT grouper that I brought up to about 5 feet below the surface and it popped off the line.

Special thanks to Brandon Barton at Emerald Waters Kayak Charters in the Pensacola area for taking me on a guided trip out to have an absolutely EPIC trip.

It was honestly so unexpected we were shaking as we saw what was on the end of our lines.

MONSTER MANGROVE SNAPPER!!!

I filled up my cooler by the end of this trip and headed home with dinner in the box!

This was an unforgettable trip – thanks to Nate and Jack for joining me out there!!

Most of the strikes came right on the bottom.

It is easier to get these big fish up to the surface if you fish a little higher up in the column.

When fishing down near the bottom the fish have the chance to swim back to structure and break you off.

Note: This very popular post on how to rig pinfish for snapper was originally published on August 31, 2020. But since then, we’ve had TONS of very helpful info added to the comments, so be sure to read the comments section too. Enjoy!

Want to see an easy way to rig pinfish for mangrove snapper?

Most people use a knocker rig or Carolina rig, which are great rigs, but there’s actually an easier way to rig them that works really well.

This rig doesn’t need any weights, beads, or swivels and it’s really quick to tie.

I was recently out fishing in the Keys and we caught loads of big mangrove snapper on this simple rig, as well as some grouper and mutton snapper.

This rig worked with both live pinfish and pinfish chunks and would also work for any other baitfish, as well as baits like shrimp and squid.

Check it out below.

How To Rig Pinfish On A Jig Head For Snapper

To rig pinfish for snapper and other bottom feeders, all you need is a flat-bottomed jig head, such as a boxing glove-shaped jig head.

This takes the need for a weight and beads away, and you don’t need a swivel, so there are fewer knots to tie (which means fewer opportunities for a fish to break you off).

Just tie the jig head to the end of the leader and you’re ready to go!

Now, why a boxing glove-shaped jig head?

Because they sit upright on the bottom, which keeps your pinfish looking natural.

Other jigs that we love for rigging soft plastics on don’t have a flat bottom, so they fall over to the side.

As far as actually hooking the fish, be sure to put the hook under the chin and out through the tough cartilage above the lips.

This will keep the jig head and pinfish upright, as well as keep the pinfish secure on the hook.

If you’re hooking a chunk of bait, hook the chunk through a side or corner so that it’s streamlined and doesn’t helicopter through the water (which can tangle or twist your line).

Now that your pinfish is all ready to go, it’s time to catch some fish!

How To Catch Snapper When Using A Jig Head

When you’re letting your bait sit on the bottom, you’re going to be feeling a lot of taps.

It can be tempting to try to set the hook every time, but if you do that, you’ll miss fish.

Instead, you want to wait for the thump.

You’ll know when you have a thump vs. a tap because it’s a lot heavier.

A tap is smaller fish pecking at it, but a thump is when a bigger fish grabs it, so set the hook then.

One final note: this type of rig is not meant to be used in every situation.

The jig head is obviously a j hook and there are some reefs where j hooks are not allowed, so do your research before you go out to see what’s allowed and what’s not.

Also, j hooks are best for actively fishing, like we were here.

We were waiting on the bite and then setting the hook as soon as we felt the thump.

If you’re letting your rods sit in the rod holders, or you’re fishing with children or inexperienced fishermen, then you’re better off going with a rig that uses a circle hook.

Conclusion

mangrove snapper

Instead of tying complicated bottom fishing rigs, hooking a pinfish on a jig head is an easy and effective way to catch snapper.

You’re less likely to get your line tangled up because the weight is at the very end of the line.

Plus, if you use flat-bottom jig heads like the Mission Fishin jig heads then your bait will stay upright.

You can get the Mission Fishin jig heads from our tackle store here.

How do you normally catch your baitfish to use for fishing?

What if you are out fishing with kids and want to get them on some fish?

Check out how to assemble this super simple baitfish rig down below!!

Learn more here!

Simple Rig To Catch A Variety Of Baitfish

This simple setup will catch smaller fish that you can use for bait or entertain your kids with some tight lines.

All you need to assemble it is a small hook, a split shot weight, and leader material.

If you are having a tough day with artificial lures, this is a great way to get some live bait and change things up.

You do not even need to change your rod setup and switch it out for a lighter setup.

Whatever you normally use for inshore fishing will work with this rig.

Assembly

You want to use no less than 20-lb monofilament leader for this rig and on the end a #2 octopus hook.

About an inch or so above the hook is where you cinch down the split shot.

Split shot #4 usually works for most situations but the weight may vary depending on the depth and current you are fishing.

There is no need to go out and buy pre-packaged rigs when you can assemble this simple rig at home.

Ideal Baits

To induce bites from small baitfish, you need to use small, bite-sized pieces of bait on the hook.

Ideally, you are using small pieces of shrimp, fiddler crabs, or sand fleas.

Make sure the pieces of bait are small and around one inch in size.

If it is larger, the baitfish will peck at it until they are able to tear it off and steal the bait.

If these baits are not readily available to you, then cut pieces of Gulp! will work as well as Fish Bites.

Where You Want To Use This Rig

The location of where you drop this rig is very important to catch the targeted species.

You want to fish docks, pilings, rock walls, seawalls, or bridges with deeper water.

You may even hook into a mangrove snapper or a sheepshead near these types of structures.

how to chum for pinfish

Fishing with artificial lures can be challenging so sometimes switching over to live bait can produce some tight lines.

Whether you are looking to catch live bait to rig up for larger fish or just want to get your kids on some fish, this is a simple and effective rig to use.

Be sure to use the proper split shot weight based on depth and current flow!

Tight lines and dinner time!

That’s what chumming up snapper is all about!

And in this video, you’ll see a fun way to catch lots of snapper (and potentially grouper) by chumming around structure.

This is a great way to fish with kids and new anglers because there’s typically nonstop action.

And as a bonus, you can catch some good-eating fish, too!

Where To Chum

Snapper like to feed near structure, so look for them around:

  • Bridges
  • Rock piles
  • Wrecks
  • Reefs
  • And other forms of structure

How To Position Your Boat

Positioning your boat is very important here.

Make sure that your boat is up current from the structure, so that when you toss out your chum it floats down toward the fish.

This will get them to move away from the structure toward the boat so you can catch them.

If you’re down current from the structure, the chum will float away from where the fish are and you won’t bring them up to the boat.

What Bait To Use

When these fish are in a feeding frenzy thanks to the chum, the bait you choose doesn’t really matter too much.

You can use live shrimp, frozen shrimp, artificial lures, or chunks of pilchards, pinfish, threadfins, or mullet.

But one tip is that you can use the size of the bait to determine the size of the fish you catch.

If you’re looking for quantity, you can put a 1/2″ or 1″ chunk on.

If you’re looking for quality, you can step it up to a 2″ chunk to weed out most of the smaller fish.

How To Rig Your Bait

My favorite rig here is putting a split shot about 3-4″ above a 2/0 circle hook.

But be sure that the weight isn’t too far from the hook.

The farther it is, the more likely your line will get twisted, so try to keep everything close together.

Another option is to use a jig head, such as the Bottom Sweeper jig or a Mission Fishin’ jig head.

Rod & Reel Setup

You don’t need anything too heavy or crazy for this style of fishing.

I was just using my regular inshore setup:

Conclusion

inshore mangrove snapper

Chumming for snapper is a great way to get tons of tight lines and bring home some delicious dinner.

It’s nonstop action and easy, so it’s great for kids and new anglers, too.

Just anchor up current of some structure, toss out a chum block, and toss out a chunk of cut bait or shrimp in there.

Want to learn how to clean mangrove snapper the quick and easy way?

We recently went out with Capt. Mark “Hollywood” Johnson of FloridaKeysFunFishing.com and caught a ton of keeper mangrove snapper using cut bait.

Fish tacos were on the menu that night, but first, we had to clean them.

Since Capt. Hollywood has cleaned thousands of these delicious fish, he agreed to show us how he fillets them in this video.

You’ll learn:

  • How to fillet mangrove snapper (while getting the most meat possible)
  • How to skin the fillets so they’re ready to throw in the frier
  • How to get rid of the bones so you don’t get an unwanted surprise at dinner time
  • And more

Check it out below.

Before you start filleting your fish, you always want a sharp fillet knife — this will make the job much easier.

Now, here’s how to clean mangrove snapper step by step:

Step 1: Cut the fish diagonally behind the gill

Step 2: Place your knife in the cut and slide it along the backbone (but stop just short of cutting the fillet off the fish)

If you angle the knife down just a little bit facing the backbone, you’ll get the most meat from the fish possible.

Step 3: Cut the fillet off of the skin

Again, angling your knife down a little bit will help you get as much meat possible.

Also, keeping the knife handle off of the table and the blade parallel to it will help maximize the size of your fillet.

Step 4: Repeat on the other side of the fish

Step 5: Cut the rib cages out of the fillets

Conclusion

I don’t know about you, but I love me some mangrove snapper tacos!

Filleting them is easy and if you follow the instructions in this video, you’ll be able to skin and de-bone them easily, too.

It’s dinner time!

In this video, we’ve got Capt. Mark “Hollywood” Johnson from FloridaKeysFunFishing.com showing you how to catch keeper-size mangrove snapper when fishing inshore.

You’ll learn:

  • An easy (and cleaner) way to chum up mangrove snapper
  • How to catch the big snapper (and avoid the little ones)
  • What bait to use to catch keeper-size snapper
  • And much more

The first step to catching mangrove snapper is to chum them up.

You don’t have to chum, but if you want to catch lots of fish fast (who doesn’t?!), then this is the best way.

Now most people use a chum block in a chum bag, but Capt. Hollywood’s been using this Chum Dinger chum box.

It works just like a chum bag, except it’s more durable and much easier to clean (so it doesn’t smell so bad).

It fits a standard 7 lb. block of chum and within just a few minutes we had loads of mangrove snapper to the boat.

Of course, we had lots of small snapper as well as big snapper, so the question is this: how do you catch the big ones and avoid the small ones?

By using cut bait instead of shrimp.

If you use a 1/2″ chunk of cut bait (we used pinfish and ladyfish on this trip) and a 3/0 circle hook, then it’ll be much harder for the smaller snapper to get the bait and hook in their mouth.

For the most part, only the bigger snapper will eat these big chunks and get hooked, so you’ll catch a lot fewer small snapper.

And here’s a final tip for mangrove snapper: they have sharp teeth and pointy dorsal fins, so grab them under the chin to avoid getting bitten or stabbed.

If you want to have a fun day on the water, catch tons of fish, and have a delicious dinner, targeting inshore mangrove snapper is a great option.

First, chum them up, and then, use cut bait to catch the keeper-sized snapper.
