All too often I see mistakes when casting artificial lures from piers, bridges, docks, and even shorelines.
Generally speaking, I’m talking about fishing from a fixed object that isn’t a moving boat or vessel.
You need to position yourself in relation to the current to properly present artificial lures.

Sweeping Technique
For this scenario, let’s say we have an outgoing tide coming out of the inlet next to this pier.
You should aim to cast your artificial lures up and into the current at a slight angle just as you would from a boat or vessel.
This is so you end up retrieving the lures with the flow of the current.
In the scenario in the video, you would want to start fishing on the furthest end of the pier during an outgoing tide.
The best chance at sparking a bite is to cast into the current at an angle and retrieve back with the water flow.
Additionally, because you’re at the end of the pier, your lure will also sweep through the current covering more water.
So you can end up covering more water while having the best possible presentation.
This is an effective method of fishing in any situation you find yourself fishing some super strong current.
Walk With The Current
Another method is walking with the current.
Again, let’s say we are fishing an outgoing tide for this example.
But, instead, you start fishing from the very beginning of the pier and walk your way out to the end.
Cast your lure into the current at an angle and work it slowly.
As you retrieve the lure, you are walking down the pier with the flow of the current.
You can cover even more ground with this technique.
Just be extra mindful of other anglers fishing around you!!!

My family and I are once again going to the outer banks for vacation again this year on the week of July 4th so I wanted to find some new spots to try and found a pier under the Oregon inlet bridge. What’s the easiest way to get my 12 year old daughter on some fish from that pier during that time? It would make her vacation if she caught anything because she has never caught a saltwater fish before.
Hey Michael! The easiest thing to do would be to get some fresh shrimp and just drop a line straight down the pilings. All sorts of fish hang around pilings of piers and bridges.
When fish from land I usually can’t move around or have much choice of which way because of crowding or rocks or trees piers around here are always over crowded but the info is very good for those that have room to use it tnx
