I found myself out fishing the LAST day of a warming trend before a cold front swept through the area.

Temperatures will drop overnight.

I anticipated a steady bite and was hoping to get into some action.

The water was insanely clear which threw me for a loop.

But we had a plan and stuck to it!

Once we made a shift to wind-protected areas using finesse presentations, we found the bite.

A lighter, finesse lure that hangs in the water column got the most strikes.

Stay stealthy, find the bait, and wind-protected areas are warmer which is what the fish want.

The Prawn USA in the New Penny color was the ticket.

In the area where we found the fish, water temperatures were about 7 degrees higher than where we started.

That made all the difference.

The sun heated up this area much faster than wind-driven spots that cool off quickly.

Later on, I switched over to a subsurface twitchbait.

Once I paused my retrieve, a trout came up and smoked it!

7 Quick Fishing Hacks [VIDEO]

1. Quick Lure Storage

You can easily have the fishing lures you plan to use throughout the day quickly accessible by attaching a pool noodle to your boat or kayak.

Slide the hooks in and out of the noodle as you need them.

2. Securing Lures During Transport

You do not want your heavy jigheads or weights banging into your fishing rod blank during transport.

To prevent any damage to the rod, use a small piece of velcro, a twist-tie, or even a small piece of tape to secure the weight to the rod.

3. Koozie Leader Storage

I’m sure you all have some can koozies lying around the house.

You can use them to secure your leader line spools so the line doesn’t fall off the spool.

4. Damaged Cast Nets

If you have a damaged or ripped cast net, don’t throw it away.

Be sure to cut off every single one of the lead sinkers on the bottom of the net.

These can be reused as weights for a rig or melted down and repurposed.

5. Prevent Rust In Lures/Hooks

To prevent rust from building up on your lures and hooks, toss a handful of uncooked rice in your tackle trays.

They will absorb extra moisture instead of the hooks and lures.

6. Used Lure Storage

For used lures and line from previous trips, get an old water bottle and store those items inside.

That way you don’t leave them on your boat or out in the environment.

7. Pre-Scent Your Soft Plastic Lures

Put a few drops of your favorite fish scent in the bags of your soft plastics ahead of time.

This will save time out on the water and allows the lures to soak up the scent for a longer period.

Casting Lures VS. Live Bait Lesson

3rd Floor Balcony Snook (Dart Cast Example)

If you’re fishing an open flat, marsh creeks, or anything in between, it is all about getting your lures out and covering as much water as possible.

Every second your lure is OUT of the water is time lost in the strike zone.

The goal here is to be as efficient as possible.

With this approach, we’re not so much concerned with accuracy as we are just getting the lure out quickly to cover ground.

After each retrieve, snap the bail open and grab the line as normal, then choke up a bit with your bottom hand to quickly launch the lure back out there without any wasted motion.

The key is to generate tip speed which ultimately dictates how far the lure goes.

You may not cast as accurately while choking up, but there is no wasted motion and you will cover all of the water in front of you.

If you’re in a tournament or out casting all day long, this slight adjustment goes a long way.

Especially when fishing an open flat, whoever can cover the most water will find and catch the most fish.

If you want to increase the number of strikes you get on an open flat, then practice this efficiency technique.

One of the worst things that can happen is you fight and reel a fish all the way up to your boat for the hook to pull and that fish swims off and out of there.

This, unfortunately, happened to me on a recent trip.

Here’s what happened and what I should have done!!

I knew I hooked into a solid redfish right along the grass line once it started pulling drag.

But it got off the hook right next to my kayak.

At one point or another, we’ve all felt a similar feeling before.

And if I was fishing in a tournament, who knows if that could’ve been the fish to take home first place.

So what did I do wrong???

If you pay closer attention to the video, the rod tip was bent but did not have much more give in it.

Meaning there was no more flex for the rod to give.

Moreover, because I was fishing with braided line, there is no stretch or give in braided line.

My knots were solid and did not break.

Ultimately, the weakest connection was the hook in the fish’s mouth.

So when that redfish made its final surge to shake the hook, it broke free of that connection.

To avoid making this same mistake, loosen up the drag on your reel when the fish is close to your boat or kayak.

Just a single click or two on the drag.

When the fish is close to your vessel and you are fishing with braided line, a slightly looser drag provides that give to the line in case the fish makes a last-second run.

That way the hook stays connected to the fish’s mouth.

The goal of this leader hack is for you to have enough strength and power to reel in BIG fish while not having to worry about your line becoming compromised.

The Dirty Deeks is assembled by using a heavier leader line of about 6-8 inches on the very end of your lighter leader line.

So for example, I typically use 15-20 lb leader and tie off a small snippet of 30 lb leader or more to create the business end.

That small portion of the leader line just above your lure is the likeliest area for abrasions or damage to occur.

If that section is compromised on a normal leader, odds are you will lose that fish.

But with a heavier tippet section, you’re ready to handle BIG fish!

In terms of which type of line to use, monofilament has proven to be much more abrasion resistant than fluorocarbon.

I recommend using a monofilament leader for the small section at the end of the line.

If you are targeting snook, I wouldn’t go below 25-30 lbs for the tippet section due to their tendency to rub and break lines.

For redfish and trout, I recommend a 20 lb business end connected to either 15 lb or sometimes 10 lb leader.

The overall goal is to have a strong leader that enables you to use lighter line to reel in the monster fish.
