Smart Fishing Spots: A Shortcut To Finding New Inshore Honey Holes
- By: Joseph Simonds

Every time you see someone catch a big fish, what’s the first question that comes to your mind?
“Where did you catch that?”
Sure, someone could give you their favorite redfish spot, but that might not help you catch redfish there…
Fish are constantly on the move all day, and where they go depends on the tide, weather, previous few days weather, season, moon, and many other factors.
If you want to consistently catch fish, it’s not just about knowing spots.
It’s about combining the free info you get from online maps with science and knowledge about how fish move based on the above factors.
Want to learn more about finding the best fishing spots?
Listen to the podcast below.
You’ll learn:
- How to quickly find new spots on an online map
- What makes a good fishing spot
- How to identify oysters from grass flats, shorelines, and other elements
- How fish move from tide to tide, and season to season
Plus Tony accidentally reveals one of Luke’s favorite spots.
We do a lot of screen sharing in this episode, so I definitely recommend watching the video version!

Can I download Smart Fishing Tides on my IPhone
Great podcast guys and yea I agree with Tony and luke that one of the problems that some of us club members is trying to determine what some structure looks like in real time as to maps and being able to interpret maps correctly like oysters to dark bottom im not a computor guru who uses the computer for wirk in fact the only thing i do use it for is basically email and saltstrong and whether it be a lifer like me and some what experienced angler or a weekend novice who is just trying the club out to see if it’s what they want some beginning anglers have an advantage iver me because of my novice ability in using a computer they can manuver the map to there liking and ability to interpret a map better then me although my on the water assessment can be better then there’s because of years experience on the water but I will never give up and although I have gotten frustrated in some cases I usually learn from those mistakes so no I wouldn’t consider myself an expert angler I have gotten much better since joining your club and i thank you all for that and i would say keep it up but I know you already will????
Thank you for the awesome feedback Steven!
Where can I find a list of Smart spots? Look at Fort DesotoPark, FL
There are a ton of spots in and around that park shown on the Master Map in the Insider Community platform. Here’s a link: https://community.saltstrong.com/RegionalMap.php
If you haven’t already done so, be sure to go through the Finding Spots Mastery course because that’s where you’ll see the recipe for selecting the right spots at the right time based on the tides, weather, and season.
not a salt type. closer to missoula montana. how about it?
Very cool! I have heard that the trout fishing is great over there. We currently don’t have much for freshwater river/stream fishing yet, but it’s absolutely on our list of additional types of fishing to cover soon. Tight Lines!
Great information in this video guys. Regarding the shadow lines cast by trees, mangroves and other structure. One can determine the time of day that the satellite image was taken by zooming in to see which side (east or west) of the structure has a shadow present. If the satellite image was taken in the morning, the shadows will be present on the west side of the structure. If the image was taken in the afternoon, the shadows will be present on the east side of the structure. So, I look for structure with shadow I may want to fish and can extrapolate that there will probably be shadow lines present on the other side of that structure – just at a time of day that is 8 or 10 hours earlier or later than when the satellite image was taken. Sorry that’s a bit long winded, but there’s a lot more to learn from the satellite images than just a picture.
Thanks for making me a more productive fisherman!
Yes, the shadow lines can definitely help tell what part of the day the image was taken.
Hi Tony
Love the video on smart fishing spots. I come from the east coast, so fishing here in Fla is a whole new game to me. I want fish Brasher Park in Fla, by kayak. I would like to here your assessment on fishing spots here. Just to see if I am reading it correctly.
Thanks
Looking forward to your feed back
We have done some Insider reports just a bit south of that park, and you can find them on the Master Map: https://community.saltstrong.com/RegionalMap.php
But just know that the overall strategies for finding and catching redfish, seatrout, snook, and flounder there are the exact same as everywhere else… the fish have shocking similar behavior patterns across regions.
WOW great show guys, so you can teach an old dog new tricks. I’ve learned so much cool stuff
since I have joined the insider club. Thanks Guys.
Thanks for making time to leave the nice comment John!
Made me smile when I saw Toby smile. He always looks so serious and ready to fish !!! LOL !!! Keep up all the good and hard work you guys do and I’ll always be Salt Strong !!! Thanks guys !!!
Haha. We love making Tony laugh on the podcast. Thanks for tuning in brother Frank!
Gotta have the game face when fishing! Haha thank you for the support Frank!
This is awesome Info that I really hope a ton of people watch! A local guy that you all did a podcast with a long time ago, told me to cast down the edges of where grass meets the sand to keep your bait in the strike zone longer and that has really helped me out a lot too. Thanks guys!
Great tip, Thomas! Thanks for taking the time to share, my friend.
