We get a ton of questions about which weedless hooks are the best to use.
And our go-to weedless hooks are the Owner Weighted Twistlock Hooks and the Texas Eye Jig Heads.
But one is better than the other in certain applications.
So in this video, you’ll learn which situations are best for the Owner Twistlock Hook and the Texas Eye Jighead.

Here are the two main weighted hooks we recommend:
Your retrieve will determine which one to use.
And the spot you are fishing in and what you are targeting will determine your retrieve.
When To Use The Owner Twistlock Hook
The Owner Twistlock Hook is more suited for a constant retrieve because of where the weight is situated.
It provides a good overall action but doesn’t have a quick change in depth which is nice for shallower water.
They work great if you’re doing a low and slow retrieve for redfish.
Or if you you want to work a little higher in the water column for trout or snook at a faster pace.
Also, you can adjust your weight on the Owner Twistlock Hooks and that’s going to change how your lure falls or suspends while in the water.
Here’s how to move your weight forward on the Owner Twistlock Hook.
Here’s how to move your weight backward on the Owner Twistlock Hook.
When To Use The Texas Eye Jig Head
Use the Texas Eye Jig Head when bouncing on the bottom or doing a twitch, twitch, pause retrieve.
It does a great job of shooting down to the bottom quickly while also keeping your bait weedless.
I tend to use these a lot when fishing around oyster bars, bouncing on the bottom for flounder, or fishing in deeper water.
Conclusion
Both the Owner Weighted Twistlock Hooks and the Texas Eye Jig Heads work great for scenarios when you need a weedless setup.
But the Owner Hooks tend to work better with a constant retrieve.
And the Texas Eye Jig Heads are more effective when working your lure on the bottom.
Have you used both of these weedless setups?

why would you use the trout eye over the texas eye?
I was wanting some advice for lake and river fishing about line colors, green blue..?
Line color for rivers?
what if i’m working oyster bars in 1-2ft of water? should i go with the twist lock hook because of the shallower depth? or still use a texas eye jig head?
I like the Owner for Gulp and Non ZMan plastics. I use the Texas Eye w Z Man plastics because the buoyancy of ZMan allow the bait to stand upright in the water. Always have both ties in in my boat.
I agree! Oftentimes I default to Texas Eye’s if I need a weedless presentation for Z-Man plastics, but I agree the Twistlocks are much better suited for Gulps!
Wyatt! Great explanation on when to use them! Ive been using the Texas Eye all wrong (Big Surprise) I will switch to the Bounce instead of steady retrieve.
Glad to hear you’ll be able to fine tune the presentation a bit more now! Thanks for watching Bob!
I have used both style hooks successfully for largemouth in a local pond! I wonder now that they’re running deeper if I should mainly focus on using the jig head or maybe a Carolina rig?
For dealing with heavier cover, I prefer the Texas Eye jighead. This is often my situation with freshwater as you can have heavy cover with sudden depth changes.
Right there with you! Around any kind of hard structure, I like the control I have with the articulating jighead on the Texas Eye, and I find that the jig head will bounce off of things a bit easier!
This should have included the Mustad Weighted Grip Pin hook. The Owner Twist Lock hooks works great with the Slam Shady 2.0 or any non-Zman baits. It’s hard to get the twist lock to work with the Elaztech baits, just takes some work. A better choice would be the Mustad Weighted Grip Pin hook. This hook would be a better choice for Zman Elaztech baits.
The Texas Eye Jighead also works best with Z-man lures. Can only use non-Elaztech lures once as they will tear upon removal.
I agree with Jonathan! The Texas Eye was made by Eyestrike in coordination with Z-Man to work well with ElaZ-Tech. I find myself defaulting to Texas Eye regardless of the situation if all I have to use is Z-Man plastics.
Agree with Teri, this was VERY helpful and a discussion on when to use weedless vs when not to would be useful. Thanks guys! It’s great to be part of the best fishing community in America!
Thanks so much Frank!! Glad to hear this tip was helpful for you sir!
